A set of six-week old twins were found dead inside an apartment in Woodside Thursday afternoon, police said.

Officers made the discovery after being called to an apartment at NYCHA Woodside Houses, located at 31-76 51st St., at around 3:10 p.m.

The police found one of the babies inside a crib, unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to the body. They found another baby—unconscious and unresponsive—under a sink wrapped in a blanket.

The mother of the children was home at the time of the discovery and was taken into custody, according to NYPD Housing Chief David Barrere, who spoke to reporters at the scene.

The name of the mother, 23, has not been released. The police had no information about the infants’ father.

Police said they recovered a knife from the scene, although didn’t say whether it had anything to do with the death of the twins.

According to Barrere, the police were called to the apartment by a relative of the mother who was concerned about the welfare of the children. Officers from PSA 9 were accompanied to the apartment by a family member before making the discovery.

Both babies were pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. A medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
