Stop & Shop Adjusts Hours, Provides Seniors With 90 Minutes of Exclusive Shopping Each Day

Stop & Shop at 34-51 48th Street in Long Island City (Google)

March 16, 2020 By Christian Murray

Stop & Shop, a supermarket chain with several locations throughout Queens and hundreds across the North East, announced today that it is adjusting its hours to accommodate senior citizens.

The grocery chain will provide senior citizens with a designated 1 ½ hour period each day– starting Thursday– exclusively for their shopping. Between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. the stores will only be open for customers over the age of 60.

Stop & Shop said that seniors are the most vulnerable population amid the coronavirus and it is important that they can get access to food and other needed supplies at this time. Furthermore, the stores will be less crowed which will enable social distancing.

The stores for the general public are now open from 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. effective immediately.

The stores were previously open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day.

Stop & Shop has stores in Long Island City, Arverne, Rockaway, Maspeth, Glendale, Ridgewood, Flushing, Howard Beach and Ozone Park. The company operates over 400 stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey.

This offer is wonderful However how many seniors will be driving and how safe is it at this early hour for them to be walking to that store. OR any sore in any neighborhood at this early hour.

I Applaud Stop & Shop for doing this for Senior Citizens, our most Vulnerable Population!
More Stores should follow this Valuable Example!
Keep our Seniors Safe, which will Prevent lots of Grief & Hardship! Congratulations “Stop & Stop.”????

While this is certainly an inconveniently early hour, consider that the store should be freshly sanitized and stock replenished, perhaps making it a great time to shop safely. Are all Stop and Shops included? Specifically, is the store on Grand Ave in Baldwin included?
Thank you for doing this.

All supermarkets except for Stop and Shop are working as team players as they have prioritized the most vulnerable community of this COVID 19. Congratulations to Stop and Shop for their efforts in thinking of the seniors ???????❤️

Do you know of other local supermarket chains that are doing this? I.e. keys foods and c-town?

It doesn’t even get light out till about 7am, no way seniors gonna make it down there if they don’t drive. Not even a safe walk at that time.

That’s all fine and dandy but some seniors might not be able to get there at that hour they should be more practical and call an afternoon trip 12 to 2 it’s more practical the hours you have are ridiculous

6am-7:30am What time to you expect this elderly people to get up? I myself would have to get up by 5am to get dressed walk my dog and get to the store!!!!
De Ciccos is setting 8-8:30 am as time for seniors. That’s at least a reasonable time.

Thanks for the effort but I’m going to have to pass. That’s an unGodly hour to be out

Great! That will give us plenty of time to get home and prepare for the early bird takeout.

Please NJ join in for the senior time. It is such a hassle shooing with others. Most times they are not considerate. We have to shop what’s left over.

This time saved for the “elderly” is too early for most “young” people! This is a good idea but a terrible time to issue for them. How are they going to get to these stores at this time?!

I don’t see any Bklyn NY stores. My children can not take me at 6am-7:30am. I’ll shop somewhere from now until I die.

The stores should be extending their hours, not cutting them. By operating for fewer hours, you are going to have a rush of people packing in to get their groceries. The only reason to stock up is so you can avoid going outside, if you’re crammed into the store with a crowd, it’s self-defeating.

Terrific.

Now if they can only bring themselves to help bag (new bags) we’d be in business.
