NYPD Appoints its First Female, Person of Color as Commanding Officer of 108 Precinct

Capt. Lavonda Wise (NYPD Twitter)

Dec. 9, 2020 By Christian Murray

The NYPD has appointed its first female captain and person of color to lead the 108 Precinct.

Capt. Lavonda Wise has just been named the new commanding officer of the 108 Precinct, which covers Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City.

Wise, who was transferred from the 115th Precinct in Jackson Heights, will lead a precinct for the first time.

She was second in command as the executive officer at the 115th Precinct prior to her appointment. She was also an executive officer at the 108 Precinct in 2015.

Wise, who has been with the NYPD for nearly two decades, takes over from Capt. Michael Gibbs who had the command for nearly 2 years.

Gibbs has been appointed as the executive officer for the NYPD Criminal Enterprise Division, which oversees organized crime.

Wise comes to the job with pedigree. Her mother was with the NYPD for approximately 30 years and was a detective.

The mother-and-daughter duo were profiled in the New York Post in 2016. Wise spoke about how her mother inspired her to join the force.

“I just remember being extremely proud of her and saying wow, you know, when I grow up I want to be a woman like that,” Wise said of her mother Detective Laverda Pugliese-Phipps.

Put that work in

I’m on 49th bet queens Blvd and 43rd ave. Last night when I was coming home there was a junkie shooting up. I kicked them off the block and called the cops but they never came. Congratulations Capt on your promotion now do your job and get these creeps.

Congratulations Captain Wise! I love to hear about somebody succeeding after years of hard work and not have a job handed to them because of some family or political connections. I wish her many years of success in making these neighborhoods safer to live and work.

While I wish her the best if you don’t think politics was a factor your fooling yourself. Some people are groomed and selected based their race and/or sex stepping over the more qualified. It’s been that way for a while and now it’s in overdrive. Qualifications are balanced off against other other factors but that’s the times we’re living in….so it goes. But again, best of luck to her.

Congrats and best of luck to the new Commander. The 108th precinct has stepped up its game recently and LIC/Sunnyside seems a little less overrun by goons. Now if only they could do something about the drag racing.

Congrats to Capt. Wise!!! As I have previously mentioned, I grew up living at 44-15 Skillman Ave. My grandparents bought that house in the 1920’s right after it was built. I moved to Ca. in 1976, and my parents sold the house in 1990 after moving to the Poconos.

Sadly, the 108 Pct. is known for its poor leadership for decades and as one of the worst run precincts in the City. Numerous leaders come in and out of the Pct. continuously, wasn’t there a new person just last year? There is never any change in emergency responses, professionalism, even distribution of patrol cars throughout all neighborhoods within the 108 Pct. I hope that the new leader is going to truly lead and knows how to manage with true accountability for the individual officers, sergeants, etc..

Sadly I can concur.

Useless desk drones. Won’t assist with crimes of theft by checking account proof (bank wants a police report, police report wants information from your bank).
