Motorist Fatally Struck While Trying to Fix a Flat Tire on the Long Island Expressway in Queens

A 52-year-old man was struck dead while changing a tire on the LIE by the College Point Boulevard exit (GMaps)

A man who was trying to fix a flat tire on the side of the Long Island Expressway in Queens early Monday morning was struck dead by a driver in a Tesla.

Jean Louis, 52, of Cambria Heights, was attempting to fix his tire on the shoulder of the westbound Long Island Expressway—before the College Point Boulevard exit—when he was hit at around 12:10 a.m., according to police.

When police arrived, Louis was lying on the ground with trauma to his body. EMS also responded and transported him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital – Queens, where he was pronounced deceased.

The operator of the Tesla remained on the scene. The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating. There have been no arrests.

According to other news reports, he pulled over on the LEFT shoulder, which is a dangerous place to try and fix a flat tire.

Some of the highways need more brighter lights!! I don’t understand why this city continues to let drivers drive in unsafe conditions

They are not the ones giving them keys to cars.

It’s everyone’s responsibly to attend to their cars safely. You can limp in the side of the road until you get to an exit so you can get to a parking lot or somewhere and fix the flat.
