ABC, the longstanding variety store on Greenpoint Avenue, has closed for renovation work that includes expanding into the former Jane’s Gifts space next door.
The store at 45-20 Greenpoint Ave. closed last Wednesday, after a large “Closing for Renovation” banner donned the front of the store since at least June.
Steven Sasson, president of ABC Super Stores, said the interior of both shops will be gutted and replaced with updated, new furniture to make for a bigger, cleaner store with the same product line.
“This store hasn’t been touched since 1978,” Sasson said—the year the bargain store opened in Sunnyside.
Sasson said the opportunity to expand came somewhat suddenly as Jane’s Gift Shop, in the space next door to ABC, closed earlier this summer.
“The opportunity came up and we took it,” he’s said.
The renovation timeline is still being worked out, but Sasson is shooting to open up shop by the end of October, although it could be pushed into November.
The Sunnyside ABC location is one of 12 for the variety store chain, which operates in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and New Jersey.

Has the store reopened yet?
THEY HAVE HORRIBLE SELECTION WITH HIGH PRICES. I WANT A BETTER STORE THAN THEM
We need Gap, carte’s, Marshall, Old Navy…No ????ABC store’s ???? Bad quality, bad products after first wash is garbage and price’s are the same as those popular store’.????
I remember in 1990 the landlord tried to clear the block from Jupiter Video on 45th street to the the Bliss Tavern on 46th. They cleared out a lot of long time businesses, only to beg them to come back when ABC stuck it to the bastards. Good luck in the future ABC.
With the expansion next door they will change their name to ABCD.
I thought the last time it was renovated was 1878!
They’ll be adding the letters D E and F
Why don’t they add dog stuff. I would go. How about you? Why don’t they put down I’m not a dog instead of I’m not a robot. Woof, woof.
It will FAIL within 2 years………..up-scaling in Sunnyside? Higher rent higher prices, the country is littered with store who did this Caldor Bradless EJ Korvette, Sears, you name it cheap and kinda run down go hand in hand. I found so much there and i could walk home with it.

“Cheap Charlie’s” was on Manhattan Ave. in Greenpoint,
“We have cheap crap at discount prices”
It’s always been a filthy disgusting store with surly help. I buy my underwear there.
We always called it “Cheap Charley’s.”
Wow, you and your mommy are witty.
