Woodside: Transgender woman allegedly attacked for being gay, Van Bramer to hold rally

Police are investigating an incident last week when a transgender woman was struck in the head with a hammer as a hate crime, and several councilmen are speaking up against violence toward transgender women.

The victim reported to police that around 6 a.m. last Wednesday a man exited a gray Toyota 4Runner and approached the victim in front of 41-01 67th Street. He attempted to steal her purse, and then struck her in the head with a hammer and yelled “This is what you get for being gay,” before fleeing the scene.

The suspect ran to his vehicle and drove southbound on 66th Street. The victim suffered substantial bleeding and head pain, and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where she was treated and then released.

The incident is under investigation by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force, which investigates bias-related crimes.

“I am outraged that yet another member of the Queens transgender community was brutally attacked on our streets just a few days ago,” said Councilman Daniel Dromm in a statement. “Targeted violence against LGBT people strikes at the heart of the community and will not be tolerated.  I await the results of the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force investigation which is currently underway and will continue to push back against hate in all its forms.”

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer also took a strong stance against the crime. He posted a statement on Facebook and Twitter that read, “I’m extremely disturbed and angered over reports that a trans woman was attacked in Woodside earlier this week. Trans women are disproportionally the victims of violence, and one attack is one attack too many. We are working with the NYPD to ensure this is being investigated as a hate crime, and we must say loud and clear that there is no room for anti-trans hatred or violence in our neighborhoods.”

Van Bramer announced that he would hold a rally tomorrow along with Make the Road New York and New York City Anti Violence Project to end violence against trans women. The rally will be at Woodside Plaza at Woodside Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue at 5 p.m.

Police have released a photo and video of the suspect, and anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477)

why is it assumed the transgender woman is gay?

that would seem like something you’d know from personal experience, which makes this premeditated.

This is a hate crime. It may not be a racial one, but it is definitely a hate crime because this poor woman was beaten due to her gender identity, and it has happened many times to transgender men and women.

no its not a hate crime when the perp is black. didn’t you get the memo? its been in effect for over 7 years

If the Trany was black would this be “Black Trannys Lives Matter” or still “Black Lives Matter” or “Tranys Lives Matter” ?

The world is facing a violent threat from Isis, and here in the U.S. we are fighting over transgender bathrooms.

and people still want to vote for the hillarieee faction.

America doesn’t have a race or gender problem, we do have a behavior one.

its inappropriate behavior that causes racism, Ebonics swearing violence, and being flamboyantly gay in corporate/ military type settings.

If this had be a straight, non-transgendered white male, nobody would give a damn, certainly not JVB.

Again, cops cant do their jobs and arrest the attacker because black lives matter. Trannys will get support because they are trannys, and thats what the world is coming to.

JVB will go from a local politician to nationally known speaker on Gay rights if he can make added hate charges stick to a black suspect…

But will he get scared off, will debozio’s black wife get involved, and demand it reduced to simple assault?

-el diablo If someone’s randomly hitting trans people with a hammer it wouldn’t take long and (or) be much of a stretch to randomly hit you and yours with that hammer. I bet that’s when it turns from a laughing matter to a life threatening criminal matter in your mind.

NO WAY is this a hate crime, blacks never ever ever get charged and convicted of a racial hate crime

this would be the first, i’ve ever heard of.

I can’t imagine hitting anyone over the head with a hammer for any reason. This man must be very damaged.

I’m sorry, but did I miss the date and time of Jimmy’s rally concerning the stealth homeless shelter in the Quality Inn on Queens Blvd? Could you publish the details of our Council representatives rally concerning this illegal homeless shelter.

JVB’s priorities can be summed up like this: LGBTQ. Oh, and don’t build anything big near his home.
