A Woodside man was sentenced to 33 years in prison on Wednesday, after pleading guilty last month to the October 2009 killing of a Sunnyside resident and then trying to hire a hit man to kill two witnesses who were expected to testify against him.

Gino Florencia, 32, killed Edison Vera in a courtyard on 48th Street and then met with an undercover cop at Rikers Island in September to organize the killing of the witnesses to the shooting. He said he would pay $2,000 for the hit.

Florencia gave the undercover cop a $500 down payment through a third party.

Queens Supreme Court Justice Gregory Lasak called Florencia’s attempted hit “an affront to our system of justice.”

The judge said he reluctantly agreed to the plea deal after prosecutors convinced him it was in the best interests of justice.

“In my opinion, you deserve a life sentence,” Lasak told Florencia.

As physicians of color at Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center (JPAFHC), we regularly witness how representation in healthcare can save lives.
