The third annual Sunnyside Spa and Salon Fest hosted by the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District kicks off this Friday ahead of Mother’s Day.

The weeklong event, which runs through Sunday, May 16, offers a variety of $30 deals at participating personal care businesses like spas, salons, barber shops and pet groomers.

The businesses are offering select service packages for customers to get pampered at a lower cost. The $30 packages include services like gel manicures and regular pedicures, haircuts, blow outs, eyebrow threading, lash extensions, hot shaves, dental scaling for pets, facial treatments and more.

The annual Sunnyside Spa and Salon Fest was not held last year due to COVID-19 closures and restrictions on personal care businesses.

The Sunnyside Shines BID is bringing the event back this year in a effort to help small businesses recover from the economic setbacks brought on by the pandemic.

“COVID restrictions severely reduced the capacity of our personal care businesses to stay alive, and personal care workers put themselves at greater-than-average risk to provide services,” Sunnyside Shines Executive Director Jaime-Faye Bean said.

“Our Spa and Salon Fest has garnered a lot of excitement in past years, and we hope that this year’s event will help bolster business for participating businesses while helping residents look and feel great.”

The businesses participating in the Sunnyside Spa and Salon Fest are:

Blades Brothers Barber Shop

Divina Threading

Hira Spa and Salon

J&L Beauty Salon

La Queen Nail Salon

Laura’s Beauty Salon

Can Queens’ food scene thrive with both trucks and restaurants?

Aug. 19, 2025 By Jessica Militello

In Jackson Heights at 4 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon, Roosevelt Avenue is buzzing with energy as commuters file in and out of subway cars and onto the street and cars and trucks grapple to get down the busy road. The street is filled with rows of shops and restaurants, along with food carts, street vendors and food trucks along the avenue. The almost-but-not-quite the weekend lag leaves hungry commuters faced with another choice to make throughout their day and the array of food truck options in busy areas like Jackson Heights offers customers convenience and delicious food without breaking the bank, two features that can feel vital, particularly with rising costs of living and pressure from inflation.
