Aug. 14, 2024 By Shane O’Brien

The sixth annual Sunnyside Spa and Salon Fest returns today, Wednesday, Aug. 14, with more than 20 local businesses taking part over the next two weeks.

A combination of neighborhood salons, spas, and barbershops will be participating in the hugely popular event hosted by the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District.

Madagascar, a pet grooming service located on Queens Boulevard, and Sunnyside Tattoo, a tattoo parlor on Greenpoint Avenue, will also participate in the event.

Participating businesses will offer a variety of $30 beauty packages in addition to personal care specials and discounts throughout the two-week festival, which runs from Aug. 14-28.

The deals offer new and existing customers a chance to get pampered on a budget, with $30 packages including services such as gel manicures and regular pedicures, haircuts, blowouts, eyebrow threading, lash extensions, hot shaves, facial treatments, and more.

Dirk McCall de Paloma, Executive Director of Sunnyside Shines, said the event is crucial for local businesses looking for extra clients or trying to get the word out about their services.

“They don’t normally have a chance to be promoted and connect with new people,” McCall de Paloma said.

“It’s a chance to really highlight these businesses and help drive some people to them. They all  definitely want to meet new clients.”

McCall de Paloma said the participating businesses play a hugely important role in the local community, providing numerous jobs to Sunnyside residents and providing a popular service to members of the local community.

“They’re from the community, of the community and for the community,” McCall de Paloma said. “It’s just a matter of people finding the barber or hairstylist or nail person who best fits their needs and with whom they have the best chemistry,” he said.

He added that it is vitally important to support local spas, salons, barbershops, pet groomers, and tattoo parlors, stating that they simultaneously employ members of the community and ensure that commercial areas remain vibrant.

“They employ people in the local community, and they’re making certain that these spaces are vibrant and occupied,” he said. “They’re critical to the local economy.”

In a statement, Council Member Julie Won welcomed the return of the two-week festival, stating that spas and salons are “cornerstones” of the local community.

“This event is the perfect opportunity to pamper yourself while patronizing over 20 local small businesses,” Won said in a statement.
