Sunnyside Deliveryman Killed by Drunk Driver

A Sunnyside Chinese-food delivery man was killed by a drunk driver.

Jiangiu Chen, 52, of Elmhurst, was a deliveryman for Sunnyside-based Ten Full Chinese Food at 39-49 48th Avenue. He was struck by a 2004 black SUV as he drove his scooter on the LIE service road at 39th Street and was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

Richard Contreras, 28, and a Long Island City resident, fled the scene – he was arrested when the police tracked down his car to Greenpoint and Bradley Avenues. Mr. Contreras was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated.

Twenty individuals were indicted and variously charged in a wide-ranging scheme to steal cars in Queens, throughout New York City and its suburbs, following a three-year investigation by the Queens District Attorney’s Office, the NYPD, and the New York State Police dubbed “Operation Hellcat,” into the criminal enterprise based in Queens.

Some of the vehicles were stolen from owners’ driveways, some with the keys or key fobs inside. The stolen vehicles were often sold through advertisements on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. The defendants are charged in nine separate indictments for a total of 373 counts, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Thursday.
