A school supply drive aimed at helping local children for the upcoming school year has recently begun, with Sunnyside Community Services asking the community to pitch in.

The community services group is collecting new supplies ranging from pens, pencils, backpacks, binders, crayons, and more for students in the Woodside Houses and the Boulevard Family Residence.

“The cost of basic school supplies can be more than some families can afford every year,” said Sheena Sukhraj, SCS’ assistant executive director of youth and family services. “We can help children have a better school experience by making sure they have the tools they need to succeed.”

SCS is hoping to collect enough supplies for at least 200 students at the two residences, which are also in after-school partnerships with the community group.

Those interested in helping can either drop off new materials to the center or purchase supplies from Amazon through August 27.

Donations can be dropped off between 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the center, located at 43-31 39th St. Online shoppers can also buy supplies listed under Sunnyside Community Services’ Amazon Wishlist. To access the list, click here.

For any questions about the drive, contact SCS at 718.784.6173 ext. 401 or send questions via email to info@scsny.org.

My goodness….we as a community should be ashamed! All the tax money that the immigrants contribute…the free cleaning of cans and bottles from my garbage…..the taxes they pay! And yet we can’t provide the basic materials they need in order to lead this country to greatness? How will they ever become the scientists, doctors, engineers of the future unless we provide the housing, medical benefits, education, …..abolish ICE!
Imagine for one second if our recent emigres had to build their own schools and actually took responsibility for themselves as did my ancestors.

I’m not trying to fool anyone. I have the right to my opinion and be heard. It’s not just the Progressives,LGBT, Black Lives Matter …groups. My Comments sting thus the Sunnyside Post edits them and others of your self loathing types mimic or parody what is written.

You think that the 22K the government spends per student, they could figure out how to supply these materials. I take this back, it probably would cost another 10K per student for the government to figure this out…

The sunnyside post will censor comments it deems objectionable based upon it’s own progressive agenda or anything remotely critical of it’s paid advertisers!

“Our President” the person currently staying and may I say temporarily at that, in the White House is not “our anything” and he wouldn’t know the truth if it bite him in whatever strands of hair he yet has. Let make America “combover” again !!

No that is not the answer. Not Everything is give give give. when I was growing up. My dad worked his butt off 2 jobs to put us through school with uniforms and supplies. There were no hand outs back then you worked and yous paid for your things period. Now every time someone wants something , it becomes donations and pay pal. I have the perfect solution, (DON’T HAVE KIDS YOU CAN’T AFFORD). WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS USE BIRTH CONTROL.

Lousy kids wanting FREE school supplies. Tell ’em what’s what J Murray! You are a STRONG, tough one. Most people think kids should get the benefit of the doubt and get pencils and paper. But they can go get a JOB!

Queens gun buyback takes 74 firearms off streets, including ghost guns and assault weapons: DA

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Monday that 74 firearms were taken off the streets at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York in Jamaica during a gun buyback event on Saturday, June 14. The weapons were exchanged for bank cards pre-loaded with cash, with no identification required and no questions asked.

“Gun buybacks serve as a critical tool for reducing gun violence and promoting public safety within our communities,” Katz said. “This Saturday, working with the NYPD and clergy leaders in Jamaica, we received 74 surrendered guns — including five automatic weapons. As a result, these firearms will not be used to cause heartache and tragedy.”
