Feb. 2, 2022 By Christian Murray

Stop & Shop supermarket will be closing its 48th Street location in Long Island City later this year, the company has confirmed.

A representative for Stop & Shop said the company decided not to renew its lease at its 34-51 48th Street store and will close in coming months—although a closing date has yet to be established.

“After a detailed review of the operating performance of our stores, we have made the difficult decision to not renew our lease at our store…,” said Stefanie Shuman, external communications manager for Stop & Shop.

The company will offer its employees positions at other area Stop & Shop locations once the store closes.

“We intend to operate the Long Island City Stop & Shop store until later in the year, and we will continue to serve the community during this time,” Shuman said. “It is early in the process and a specific closing date has not been determined.”

The announcement comes 12 months after BJ’s Wholesale Club opened its Long Island City store across the street at 34-60 48th St.

I hope things somehow manage to change. With how expensive other places have gotten, S n S still offers great prices thanks to accepting coupons and their discount program. I need this place now more than ever, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens.

I love very much this store. We will be very unhappy after they will close. They are offering wonderful services and products at very good prices. They are offering products you will not find anywhere else(like lactose free ice cream or plant based ice cream) organic products and anything else you will need, at a very convenient prices. We will miss them badly.

Please restock Friskies can cat food & others too. They will sell faster than your lease can end. Other items too that You know by weekly sales what items will fly off the shelves. SAD, SAD to lose our favorite supermarket

I have shopped at S n S for years! I wonder if they had lower sales because of online shopping and delivery. Anyway I called their feedback number and a real person answered and they forwarded my message: please don’t close the Sunnyside store!!! Lets all call! 800-767-7772

As far as I know, the other big grocery store on Northern Blvd, Food Bazaar, is a branch of Key Food. I think that may mean that if/when Stop and Shop closes all the supermarkets or big grocery stores in Sunnyside will be associated with Key Food.

Monopolies are never good for consumers.

I am afraid this may mean food prices are going to go way up because the Key Food chain will have no competition.

this is a great store. is a shame to workers. shoppers and community
Bj i dont think really made a difference, they sell in bulk. I think bad management , higher ups. shopping carts are being stolen, over and over a gain. why, someone is not doing their job, There are days that
check out only has 2 opened. the shelves are not full, forget cat food.
If you know a store like bjs is opening across the street, stop and shop should of taken better steps to bring people in. Now they are doing digital coupons. dont forget there are still older people who shop that dont do digital. I hope they rethink closing this store, it would be nice have a
rally to keep it open. I hope another nice supermarket opens in this location,

Keepin it 100!

I guess it was all the white supremacists, going to Stop & Shop, from the projects, who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars of merchandise from this location, and they can’t afford the increasing rent, without making a profit. Too much merchandise going out the door. Shameful.

This can not happen in such a diverse neighborhood. Its also so close to woodside housing. Won should organize a peaceful protest. Many people will go hungry because of this.

Upgrade, Stop & Shop , Thank you, you did your job snd served us. Now its time to move forward and help the community, we need a Trader Joes or Whole Foods.

Oh God no! Whole foods is way too expensive and Trader Joe’s have no selection. Prepackaged mostly. Learn to cook people!

Maybe they are closing because no one want to work around people anymore. A Burger King employee was killed last month and people are afraid to work in nyc. Also business is losing a lot of money because some people are stealing bags of items and just walking out without paying. The cops are not doing much about that type of theft. And local politicians are saying they need the loaf if bread.

Exactly right, Bertha. Don’t be surprised to see other stores close for these same reasons. Food Bazaar has had an armed cop at the front door for years. I used to think that was overkill. Now I don’t.

I am so sad about this. I love this store. BJ’s is for people who buy in large quantity. What about people who only shop for themselves or themselves and one other. The only other local is in Middle Village and it is disgustedly overcrowded with parking spaces… fine 10 years ago. I used to shop there but do not go any more because the parking is insane.

I went to the Stop and Shop in Flushing yesterday. Much nicer, well stocked and plenty of parking. The building here needs a renovation for whatever goes in there. I hope it’s a better market. Definitely should relocate the stinky can recycling area.

So sad to hear…..been shopping there for over 20 years…..by the way this is an old pic.. there are Citibikes in front of the supermarket which no one uses and takes up precious parking space….

Wegman’s, Wegman’s, Wegman’s or Trader Joe’s would make up for it…for sure.
This change could be good.

Many still depend on this location…like me.
I am not a fan of BJ’S and you have to be a member to shop there. Besides, I’m one person.
It is no benefit to me.
I love the convenience of this Stop and Shop with great selections and the Organic products I can find here.
The Stop and Shop on Grand Ave has awful parking.
My friends from that side of town come to this 48th St location.

Stop and Shop parent company is also the 80% owner of Fresh Direct. People don’t want to shop anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised to see FRESH DIRECT take this over. It has all the amenities for location.

Had no clue that Fresh Direct was now owned by the parent company of Stop & Shop which also owns Peapod. Very interesting.

Would not be surprised if the location was purchased by Amazon and became a distribution center. They did the same thing on LI when Waldbaum’s closed. The roof top parking would be ideal for their trucks. No other supermarket would want the space to compete with BJs across the street.

We found the deli counter extremely helpful and then the younger employees moved on. The bakery was our secret weapon for quick birthday cakes for the coworkers and surprise treats.
Sure, they had some personal problems and known individuals who needed to be banned from the building. But to leave is going to hurt the community.

Landlord is already chipping up the tile floor and polishing the concrete. In preparation for the next Tennant?

It will hurt the community….BJshoppers are not from the area. They come from all over. That place is a zoo to shop in. And basically bulk.

Not good news for me. While BJs may be economical for some, not everyone needs to or has the storage capacity to buy in bulk. I’ve never bought food products, only cleaning and personal care products. I like the Stop & Shop with their variety, fair pricing and wide aisles.

Plenty of parking.
Walking distance…
The Stop and Shop on Grand ave is a nightmare to park.
The one on Woodhaven Blvd doesnt have same great variety selections as 48th St. Its the best.

Oh man! That’s the only good supermarket around. It’s nice and spacious, great parking on the rooftop, lots of organic products, and quality variety.
I’ve been a customer for years! What a bummer!

So crazy–they just renovated this store! It’s so nice and easy and affordable to shop there. Great selection and v. friendly staff too. I seriously hopes SnS reconsiders for the sake of the neighborhood…there’s really nothing else good in East Astoria/Woodside. Can we start a petition?

I would’ve been on board for writing but really like the idea of a Wegmans coming to our neighborhood. It would be great if we could f ind out who the new tenant will be first. Some changes can be good. Even though I love this Stop and Shop. I will pass and hope for another great supermarket .

WHAT? Please don’t close! This is terrible news! Stop ‘n Shop is the only best supermarket in the neighborhood. I live in Woodside & shop at Stop ‘n Shop due to Key Food not storing food properly. I bought yogurt at Key Food to find it molded when I got home; and a friend had mold in a frozen dinner bought from Key Food!

This is how “supermarket deserts” start – rampant, unprosecuted shoplifting coupled with sky high retail rents. Then we ALL pay one way or another. Hope Whole Foods does NOT come here. Traffic is bad enough with that Lemony Snicket traffic reconfiguration on 39th Ave & Barnett.

i’m going to miss the meat prices and the often on sale ultra jumbo shrimp. they often had nice meat and seafood sales. cheap keyfood always has the same thing on sale and i refuse to buy any meat from their stores because its always stocked up, meaning nobody buys it, meaning they color in the meat to make it look fresh. and its never vacuum packed like stop and shop’s, so keyfood can change the best by date and they pump their meat with so much water, that if you tilt the package, you can see it oozing out of the meat. food bazaar has the highest prices i’ve seen on meat and seafood. not worth the walk to go there.

This is terrible as it is the best shop in Sunnyside — good selections and prices plus friendly staff. Our other smaller stores here charge more for most items plus unfriendly or helpful staff.

For those that drive — this store works as there is no parking by the Key Food Stores

I can walk around the corner to my local Key Food, but it’s cramped and often don’t have the brands I look for, but it’s good for just a few things. For moderate/large food shopping I drive to Stop & Shop for their better variety and prices.

that’s all there is…is super cluttered key foods. they bought out the Associated, they bought out the Met, the bought out the C-town, they are now a monopoly. there are no options. very very expensive and no choices, its all the same..superfresh, green valley, food universe, fresh and save…its all the same company! thats how they keep prices high and keep raising prices, they eliminate the competition. isnt there laws against this?

Let’s hope for an even nicer establishment. Wegman’s is fantastic and fair pricing . Cooked foods section . International choices. A step up from Stop and Shop and Trader Joe’s. If This one must go. Wegmans would be a great replacement.

the costco memberships are worth it if you are making big purchases like tv, fridge, stove, water heater. they add 2 years of additional warranty, although, i dont know if you have to keep the membership year to year to claim that warranty when it’s needed in the future.

City Council passes bill shifting broker fee burden to landlords, sparking backlash from real estate industry and key critics

Nov. 14, 2024 By Ethan Stark-Miller and QNS News Team

The New York City Council passed a landmark bill on Wednesday, aiming to relieve renters of paying hefty broker fees — a cost that will now fall on the party who hires the listing agent. Known as the FARE Act (Fairness in Apartment Rentals), the legislation passed with a veto-proof majority of 42-8, despite opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats.
