Speed Bump Installed Near I.S. 125

June 13, 2011 Staff Report

A new speed bump that will increase student safety near IS 125 was unveiled on Friday. At the request of IS 125, councilman Jimmy Van Bramer worked with the NYC Department of Transportation to have the speed bump installed.

The speed bump is located on 47th Street between 47th and 48th Avenue.

“Every precaution should be taken to protect pedestrians, particularly kids, from drivers who speed,” said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer (D-26, Queens).

sunnyside_south, we have a few property owners and tenants along the street that we get together time to time and chat. On a few occasions some tenants had to call 911 due to loitering that goes beyond the bottle redemption area and spills into those houses across the street and buildings near by. Just yesterday as I was walking towards greenpoint, I noticed a gang of 7 people sitting on the sidewalk and the steps of one of those houses across from the street. There is almost always garbage on in front of associates, and good luck if you ever can walk on that side without gagging due to the smell.

We are going off topic, but the situation needs to be brought to the attention of associates corporation more strongly, because I know that some of those fellow 44th residents did in fact wrote to associates about the condition of the area, and noting was done. The little alley that is gated behind associates is also used as a urinal on daily basis.

Speed bumps are proof that there are drivers don’t worry as much about damaging people as they do about damaging their cars.

I agree wholeheartedly with HY1 about the situation on 44th street. between the post office and associated its out of control. a “no honking” sign would be nice but won’t matter without the follow up enforcement.

and the area outside associated along 44th street is disgusting.

I guess Anonymous is one of the drivers who like to honk, so he is upset.
I wonder how he would like it if I came by a truck every half an hour and honked that big air horn in front of his window. The ignorant truck drivers are lazy get out of their trucks to tell the other truck or the merchant that they are there, instead they like to just blow their horn.

Associates on 44th is blocking the road every single day, and the cars line up all the time, they make a racket and then speed away.

When they blocked the exit from 43rd parking area and the area under 46th station, the only outlet for most people ended up being 44th street. The vehicles who need to get to 495 use 44th street as their shortcut every singe day. The volume went up incredibly ever since the road blocks were installed. The added safety of those intersections are worth a lot more than the added volume, but something had to be done. Possibly synchronize the traffic lights, so that when cars cross queens blvd by the time they get to greenpoint/46th ave the light would be green. But the light is either turning yellow by then causing ignorant drivers to speed up, or it remains red only to turn green for a short period. And of course, I am not even going to start with the double parked vehicles.

Sunnyside_south is absolutely right. Drivers in this city just don’t give a crap about safety, and why should they? They’re never going to be held accountable.

we need enforcement from the police, but we all know we aren’t getting any kind of presence or coverage from the 108, located miles in LIC.

but things like speed bumps, signage, traffic lights/blinking lights, raised crosswalks, more medians, etc all help a little.

unfortunately in NYC if you’re sober and don’t have a suspended license, you are not held accountable for any mayhem you might cause while driving through our neighborhoods. too many people just don’t give a crap.

sunnyside-south I agree with you about reckless driving. Did you know that all state gives its drives a check twice a year for safe driving. I do not know if other companies do the same bu t all state advertises this prgram on tv.

we al hate reckless driving but we need to stop it rather than talk about it.

sunnyside-south what would you dso to stop it?

the way drivers speed around here traffic calming measures are needed. Some might be against any form of government stepping in when action is needed, but the reality is local drivers are reckless and need to be forced to slow down.

people care more about getting home 5 min sooner than considering the safety of others. but they also care more about not damaging their car on speed humps. speeding is a problem on that specific block and on 46th street.

Dear anoomus deal with it is not an anwer. I thought we were suppose to be nice and kind to each other. try and live by the golden rule.

Sartle we do not need a speed bump for every street but we could be more considerate of street noise by people, trucks and cars . What do you think?

Why not call brammers office and see what you can do. I do no how long the process takes .I would love to find out though. Our little town always has honkng horns of truck drivers and cars with no patience and honk terribly out of no patience for people and traffic.

Congrats to brammers for this safety speed bump all schools should have this to slow traffic down . It should be a law not a councilman issure to fight for. When a school is being built speed bumps should be put in at the end. But I am grafjul to the councilman for keeping the streets safe for the students at this school and faculty as well.

Where do we have to sign to get one in our street, as well as a do not honk sign because the darn trucks wake up my 9month old every time they blast their horns, as well as the impatient ignorant idiots who cannot stand waiting 2 more seconds after light turns green.
