Sunnyside Post Mile Kids Dash 2018

Oct. 18, 2022 Staff Report

Hundreds of participants are set to take part in the Sunnyside Post Halloween Mile on Saturday. Most already have their costumes planned.

The event is for both runners and walkers, and the goal is to raise funds for Sunnyside Community Services, a community-based non-profit that provides programs for individuals of all ages.

The run/walk will start at 10 a.m., with an opening ceremony kicking off at 9:30 a.m. The event will take place rain or shine.

Runners are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes, although it is not required.

“We are thrilled that Sunnysiders will be out in force Saturday to participate in this year’s mile,” said Christian Murray, co-publisher of the Sunnyside Post and a co-organizer of the event. “It’s great to be part of a vibrant community.”

There will be prizes for the fastest runners, as well as prizes on offer for those who come with great costumes. For instance, there will be Halloween prizes for the best dressed kids, adults, as well as families. There will also be a prize for the best dressed pet.

Those interested in participating in the mile are still able to register for the event and will be able to do so on the day.

However, to avoid long lines, the organizers are recommending that participants sign up before race day and pick up their T-Shirts and bibs at Sunnyside Community Services, located at 43-31 39th St., this Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event is being organized by the Sunnyside Post, Woodside-Sunnyside Runners and Sunnyside Community Services.

“While runners are able to register on the day, we recommend signing up now and picking up your T-Shirt and bib on Friday,” said Czarinna Andres, co-publisher of the Sunnyside Post.

Course Map

The starting line will be located by Lou Lodati Park on 43rd Street. Participants will run down 43rd Street, then turn right onto Barnett Avenue and turn again onto 48th Street before finishing on Skillman Avenue (42nd Street).

The roads will be cleared by the NYPD for the event.

Participants are permitted to run/walk with strollers and leashed dogs are welcome.

There will be children’s dashes along Skillman Avenue. They will begin at 10:45 am, with children of different age categories (from 2 years to 9 years) lining up at 43rd Street and Skillman Avenue.

The admission fee for the Sunnyside Post Mile, which includes a limited-edition race day shirt, is $24 for adults, $20 for seniors (60 and above) and $15 for children. Children who participate in the dash also receive a race day shirt.

All proceeds benefit Sunnyside Community Services.
