Shelley’s To Reopen Under New Name In June, Local Bartender Signs Lease

March 15, 2016 By Christian Murray

A Woodside resident who has been working at a variety of Sunnyside and Woodside bars over the past 15 years is taking over Shelley’s.

Dympna Rogers, who said she signed a lease last month to take over the 58-15 Woodside Ave. establishment, told Community Board 2’s City Services committee last week that she plans to reopen the bar in June.

She said that she has experience in the industry, having worked at the Copper Kettle, McGuinness’s and the Station Bar, all local establishments.

Shelley’s closed last April. The owner of the building, Deborah Strack Cregan, told the community board in September that she was going to reopen it. Cregan and her husband had run the bar from 1986 through 1999.

However, nothing materialized and Rogers said she is now taking over the 70-year-old pub.

“Shelley’s has always been here and will always be here,” Rogers said.  “It just needs a new lease on life. We want people to feel welcome, including the new people moving in.”

Rogers said that she is going to rename the bar Beerkeeper and will be making some minor alterations.

The community board committee gave its blessing for the bar to be open from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. seven days per week. The board said it could keep its small rear yard space open until 10 p.m.

I’m hopefully going to open at Shellys or another location some organic fare. Like an organic express with organic coffee. Dympna if you are reading this send me an email. I think we have enough pubs. There are less and less of us anyways anymore due to the racist Hart Immugration law of 1965 which restricted all migration from Ireland and Europe.
So demographically another bar won’t succeed as say a bar catering to the Spanish or Chinese in ye areas unfortunately. We could always make it a fusion food bat place maybe. In any case Woodsdie is finished as a stopping point for us Irish folks. Unless we get Crowley off his ass and support legislation to overturn that severely racist law of 1965. I know the Tea party is in favor of overturning the 1965 immigration act. We wil see when our God The Donald is elected. He will get more of us Irish and Scottish into America once more legally. And deport all the others coming over the rio grande

And no I’m not a customer of Shellys but it was so run down and we def dot need any more run down businesses

A trader Joe or whole foods market would be excellent In the spot I think
Or the new bar could have some organic food fare.

I’m sure John would approve!

He would surely say the same!

Pat you sound like an old school traditional guy which is great, but you also sound like a sarcastic bitter guy. If your such a businessman, why not make the profits from the food for the business instead of giving the income to ottomanelli? It was obvious shellys sunk with guys like you. With the rent that the new owner is paying why not maximize your potential income. Whos talking about organic food anyway. What kind of business do you run, a can collection route. If you are a business guy, you would know better. Probably one of shellys old customers who is afraid of change. Btw, john taffer could probably help you with your can and bottle route

Yeah. You should really contact John taffer from Bar Rescue on Spike TV
He can make your new bar into a goldmine for sure
He did a bar in Sunnyside called the firehouse
Try to make some organic food dishes that People in the area will like
I like burgers so you could be some keen competition for ottomanellies
I run a business Myself so I pretty much know what I’m talking about
Good luck dympna!

Dont keep it named shellys. I wish dynpna luck but it will be named after a losing business. It will be automatically associated with the failure it used to be. New fresh name, something neutral, not ethnically named. Open to all. Change is good in this case. Put a kitchen in and get rid of the space taking waste of money pool table too. Good luck

Hope no one throws butts on the ground too. Don’t let the patrons smoke out front. It just Causes lung problems for the rest of us who have to walk past.
