Ravenswood Generating Station Gets New Name As Company Aims to Reflect Commitment to Clean Energy

Ravenswood Generating Station (Rise Light & Power)

Jan. 18, 2021 By Allie Griffin

A New York-based power company is rebranding its Long Island City subsidiary–Ravenswood Generating–as it looks to convey its commitment to clean energy production.

LS Power is renaming Ravenswood Generating — which operates New York City’s largest power generator, Ravenswood Generating Station — to Rise Light & Power.

Ravenswood Generating was acquired by LS Power in 2017. LS Power has renamed it to reflect its effort to integrate more clean energy practices into the subsidiary.

Rise Light & Power will continue to operate the 28-acre waterfront power facility in Long Island City, which provides more than 20 percent of the city’s generation capacity.

But it will also focus on large-scale clean energy projects.

LS Power has invested more than $160 million in modernization and resiliency upgrades at the Long Island City power generating station since 2017. It removed more than 300MW of fossil-fired peakers from service to make way for new clean energy infrastructure.

“LS Power is proud to be a part of New York’s transition to clean energy,” said Paul Segal, CEO of LS Power, owner of Rise Light & Power. “By launching Rise Light & Power, our goal is to reassert our commitment to directing our efforts and capital toward enabling an affordable energy transition while maintaining essential reliable electric service.”

The company will also create a large-scale battery energy storage facility and is working on a project to supply 15 percent of New York City’s electricity needs with new wind and solar energy from upstate New York.
