Agreed, Mendel. Please do obey all laws pertaining to dogs, especially picking up after them. Dogs do not belong on a running track or in a children’s playground.

Sunnyside Native, as for OM, he has had a bug up his rear for the dog run since he finally found out about it. What he forgets is that SUDS did it the right way. We had no ‘connections’, we didn’t bully anyone for that space, we were CARETAKERS of the park for the better part of a decade, cleaning up after his beloved soccer/volleyball players who were wrecking the place on a daily basis. I guess he prefers it that way?

The dog park was approved in 2006 by the Community Board, had OM been as active a participant in our community as he claims he could have voiced his opinion @ any # of CB#2 meetings. Not a single person turned out in opposition of the dog run in Lodati, let me repeat, NOT 1, and we had to go thru a vote in 2006 AND 2011 (when the Parks changed its design). We also got over 1000 signatures back in 2005-6 in favor of the run. The Qns Parks Dept approved it. Mind you, this is ALL pre-Van Bramer. We got discretionary funding from then Councilman Gioia and then lost it as the city can take back these funds in time of need. We didn’t whine and complain about it, we knew that was a possibility, we continued to do the right thing by that park. OM, how many times did you go in to clean up after your soccer buddies? Exactly, never.

JVB came along and got us the funding necessary to achieve our dream of not only building the dog run, but fixing up the WHOLE park. That’s not good enough for OM tho. What have you done to make the quality of life in the park better, OM? Exactly…nothing.

The Doughboy dog run was built many years ago, and please correct me if I am wrong here, but I believe it was in a different section of the park and moved to its present location (and then shrunk to a 10ft X 15ft box), which is a useless size, so the group began to use the area around the run. The location of the dog run, if it stays in its current spot, will effect no one, it’s on a sloped hill, not of any use to a sports team.

OM, the park is being fixed for everyone in our ‘hood to enjoy. The way it was, just 2 groups got to enjoy it during the day, as most in the area didn’t want to go in due to the drinking, public urination/defecation, garbage and rowdy behavior.

Something people forget, dog runs are not just about dogs, they are about people too. This is how some people choose to recreate. OM recreates by typing anti-dog rants on the post all day, and that’s fine. I
m not against that. The new, IMPROVED park will be a much better place for the WHOLE community, and how you can see that as a bad thing, I have no idea.

SUDS is one of the biggest groups in Sunnyside, and for being a valued member of the community, our hard work was rewarded.

The dog run is coming OM!

Dogs are not allowed in most of Windmuller Park. Please observe the park rules and do not bring your dogs on the running track, basketball courts or the children’s playground. Those areas are clearly posted “No Pets” and there is a picture for those who can’t read. There’s a good reason why these areas are posted that way. I hope you enjoy the parade in Doughboy Park in the dogrun.

Oppressed Masses – I see you comment so positively on other issues within Sunnyside: the Oktoberfest pub crawl, the new baby co-op that was launched as a baby-sitting sharing collaboration, the Sunnyside Garden Boxing Arena. I have to ask…what is the bug up your ass about the dogs & dog owners in the neighborhood having a dog run? Don’t you feel like if a person pays $350k for a condo or $250k for a cop-op to live here in Sunnyside and if they own a dog, that they should be deserving of return on their investment, on many different levels in their community? Your CONSTANT negativity and berating of the dogs and the dog run is annoying, sad and pathetic. You positively commented on Father Dowd being named ‘Sunnysider of the Year’, which I appreciate, because he is a wonderful man. So wonderful that when our puppy was VERY sick, he took time out right before he walked down the aisle for the 12:00 PM mass on a Sunday, to bless my dog with holy water, say a prayer & made the sign of the cross on him. This gave me peace of mind. This kind gesture from Father Dowd, in conjunction with medical intervention, our dog is almost 3 years old and is healthy & happy and will be able to enjoy the Woofside Halloween Parade and BOTH dog runs. If Father Dowd can delay mass for 2 minutes, I am sure you can evoke (or feign) a little happiness for the dogs in the neighborhood. It is not all about YOU and YOUR special interests after all! I am born & rasied here in Sunnyside and a lot of people who grew up here have been waiting many, many years for this to happen here in Sunnyside!

I don’t like the phrase “any funds raised” will go to charities. Where is the $20.00 going? I thought this was a fund raiser not a profit opportunity for a pet shop. Where is the twenty bucks per pet going?

Another dog park, within a mile of Lodati Park?! The story omitted that the theme of the parade is “Tribute to Jimmy Van Bramer”. It’s great to live in a city council district where community social needs are so fully met that two dog parks are under construction within blocks of each other.

DA Katz introduces Kimi, the facility dog providing comfort to Queens crime victims

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz introduced one of the newest members of her team on Wednesday as part of her office’s public information campaign during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
