Sept. 27, 2011 Staff Report

Two men who attacked a number of Sunnyside and Woodside women earlier this year–in a series of separate incidents– are expected in court in October.

Paul Winston, a 21-year Brooklyn man, who mugged a series of Sunnyside/Woodside women near the 52nd Street subway station, is being held in jail in lieu of $150,000.

Paul Winston allegedly followed several women when they got off the 52nd Street subway station and then “grabbed them from behind and whacked them to the ground,” said Capt. Donald Powers, the police captain at the 108 Police precinct. He would then steal their belongings.

Powers said at the time that there had been six robberies of this type near 52nd Street between January and April, with Winston confessing to four of them.

Winston was charged in four criminal complaints and his next court case is October 19, 2011.

In three of the complaints, second-degree robbery is the top count and is a Class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.  In the fourth complaint, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property is the top count and is a Class E felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

Meanwhile,  Damari Morris, a 16-year-old from Brooklyn,  who mugged six Sunnyside women on the northern side of Queens Blvd in early January has been free on his own recognizance. He will be sentenced on Oct. 13.

Morris followed women to their apartment buildings from the 40thStreet subway station, then knocked them to the ground and stole their belongs, said Capt. Donald Powers, the police captain at the 108 Police precinct. Morris took cell phones, iPods, mp3 players and cash.

Morris pleaded guilty on July 7, 2011, to second-degree burglary, a Class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Meanwhile, a Woodside woman who allegedly threw her baby into a trash can at Elmhurst hospital, is out of jail having posted $20,000 bail. The woman, Dawa Lama,  is due back in court Sept. 29.

Lama is being charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.  The top count — first-degree assault — is a Class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

Roger, we get that you hate abortion. What I find so offensive about your oral diarrhea is that you don’t even bother to read the actual law before you spew your ignorance all over this forum.

“The sick irony here is that if a few hours before the baby was born, Dawa Lama could have paid an abortionist to dismember the baby and suck out its brain then toss the parts in a medical waste bin and it would have been perfectly legal.”

Wrong, Roger! Abortion is not legal in NYS after 24 weeks except in the event of endangerment to the life of the mother. Get your facts straight. Your opinion and lack of knowledge is embarassing and diminishes your credibility about everything you say, regardless of the topic. Sure hope you’re never called to testify in court, because all a lawyer would have to do is look at some of your postings here to demonstrate to a jury about how misleading your words can be.

People do not have enough sympathy for dead infants. Period. The “parents” are frequently given a lighter sentence because the infant is barely considered a person. A sad commentary on our times.

“Thou shalt not kill” is pretty straightforward, regardless of what the “Supreme Court” decided.

How is (allegedly) throwing a baby into the garbage a “Class C” felony? The Dead Baby’s totally innocent.

How absurd, this argument about something that wasn’t even included in the original article.

Ok, I’ll play along: What if she had gotten her abortion at Sunnyside Gardens Park with city funds?

Well, maybe she wasn’t a member. Those elitists with their exclusive abortions.

@Raquel, I do not base whether murder is right or wrong based on religious commandments, rather on common law.

@Roger, unfortunately the Supreme Court disagrees with you.

@get over….

Abortion is indeed legal, if you read my comment carefully before hurling your insults, you would have seen that I pointed that out.

Keep in mind slavery was also legal at one dark period of this country’s history. The fact that it was a constitutionally protected practice thankfully didn’t stop people from speaking out and fighting against it.

To reiterate my original point. Butchering a baby still developing inside the mother is no more justifiable than butchering one that has just emerged from the birth canal.

What makes you think, Mr. Get Over Yourself, that I AM NOT A FOSTER PARENT OR HAVE NOT ADOPTED CHILDREN???? Abortion stops a beating heart. And for some people, there is no difference between being a “clump of cells” one day, and a “baby” the next day. The legal niceties mean nothing to them and they believe they have the right to snuff out the life of their infant because she is “inconvenient”. How convenient of you to attack those of us who want to SAVE LIVES. This woman committed a heinous act. I guess, in your eyes, the infant deserves no pity, tears or mercy. To quote from Dr. Seuss, “A person is a person no matter how small.” Tell me, Mr. Get Over Yourself: if the 10 Commandments did not exist, would you think that murder is wrong?

@Raquel, what this woman did is without a doubt criminal and worthy of the stiffest sentence that can be given. However, abortion is legal, whether you like it or not. It has nothing to do with ego and all to do with laws that are ratified through our society. Would it have been criminal of her had she decided during her first months of pregnancy to have an abortion, absolutely not, it’s her legal right. Unfortunately she chose to go down a route, for whatever reason, fear, embarrassment, etc., that now has consequences she must bear and rightfully so. As for what degrades society, how about individuals such as yourself who take a holier-than-thou stance on pro-choice, as is obvious by your use of Infanticide (killing of a fetus) over the word Abortion (termination of a pregnancy) yet do not find it within your moral or religious heart to march on down to the NYC Foster Care division and adopt one or two of the thousands upon thousands of unwanted children who exist in that system at this very moment. It’s very convenient on your part isn’t it. In any case I think this woman should be dropped into a landfill with her hands tied behind her back for at least a weeks time but that might affect both your moral and religious sensibilities so I guess in then end we just have to let the justice system punish this woman; the same justice system that decrees that abortion is perfectly legal.

Get _ over – you need to get over yourself! What an ego. Infanticide -whether by an abortionist or by the mother, is terrible and also degrades society. If you cannot defend the defenseless . . . I feel sorrow for this poor baby who certainly could have been adopted. The woman was in the hospital. She could have left the infant there under the “Safe Haven” law. What she did was cruel and senseless. The cruelty is unimaginable. Try to imagine this poor baby gasping for breath.

@Roger, actually that’s just my point, you have no argument, you presented no argument, and you made no constructive attempt to even reference the article at all. What you did was go right past GO and jump right into, “they could have used calipers to tear heads; they could have snapped its spine and sucked it out with a FloBe system,” ya-da,ya-da,ya-da. Present an argument Roger and you’ll get a counter argument, its really a simple concept.

It’s clear by your childish name-calling and insults that you have no substantial counter argument or factual points to contribute.

other than the ones mentioned above, have there been any more reports of robberies around the 40th street subway station?

Okay Roger its clear that you are one of those retarded my-morals-and-ideology-trumps-yours anti-abortionist b/c what you just said is such a moronic attempt at really making a non-point.

unnecessary

Not sure why the photo was included. The woman is sick. Most women who commit infanticide are sick and need help. What she did is awful but just not sure why the photo was necessary.
