The New Post Coffee Shop (40-01 Queens Blvd.) was shut down by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on Wednesday. The diner, which racked up 67 violation points, will be closed until it can pass a re-inspection.

An employee who answered the door said, “We are working to fix everything and we should have an inspection tomorrow. We should be open soon.”

The diner was written up for the following:

1)     Cold food items held above 41 degrees…except during necessary preparation.

2)     Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.

3)     Appropriately scaled metal stem-type thermometer or thermocouple not provided or used to evaluate temperatures of potentially hazardous foods during cooking, cooling, reheating and holding.

4)     Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

5)     Filth flies or food/refuse/sewage-associated (FRSA) flies present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas. Filth flies include house flies, little house flies, blow flies, bottle flies and flesh flies. Food /refuse/sewage-associated flies include fruit flies, drain flies and Phorid flies.

6)     Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.

7)      Facility not vermin proof, Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.

8)     Plumbing not properly installed or maintained; anti-siphonage or backflow prevention device not provided where required; equipment or floor not properly drained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly.

I love it hope when a restaurant is inspected and fails (or passes) someone has to assert that there is a shakedown, a bribe, or something happening under the table. Such a lack of respect for the integrity of the folks that work for the city and for us! Sure, there is always the bad apple, but most of these folks are doing their jobs and not getting rich off of bribes and payoffs. Makes me wonder about the loudest voices accusing them of a lack of integrity: what are YOU hiding?

I used to like this place a lot but it is a bit overpriced. Prefer New York Eats but to each his own. I was sorry about Tommy. Also, recall that somebody was shot to death in the New Post maybe 5 years ago and there were no arrests. The place has bad luck.

@ruben
I did not know that YUPpies worked at the post. This would have made your premise more plausible . since all sunnyside YUPpies are out to get you, it would make sense for em to get rid of the only one who knew your name. 🙂

@Ruben – Employees wearing black ribbons and grieving the loss of a dear friend they had known and worked shoulder-to-shoulder with for over a decade…that’s what you witnessed. Good people shaken to the core over the loss of someone they dearly loved.

If if looks like a snake, and moves like a snake, then it’s a snake. How else could one describe the nasty dispositions of the brothers who run a rats nest infested business that’s completely unedible for even dogs.

New York Post SUCKS…It’s a shadow of it’s former glory. Post used to be THE spot for breakfast and lunch. Tommy used to have that kitchen humming . I have a theory what happened. So sit back kiddies and listen.

I knew Tommy…He was the face you’d want to see every morning. He would remember your name and his warm conversations helped kick start a day. Tommy made the post the Diner equivalent to CHEERS..a place where everyone knew your name.

Well one day…We find out that Tommy died. An apparent suicide. The neighborhood was rocked. “How could this BE???” we asked ourselves. There were no signs of depression. The next few days we walked by the post and not a single notice was put up about the death of an employee who had worked there for years. No respectful shrine, nothing. The employees would work nervously, as if a deep dark secret was being kept.

It is my theory that Tommy did not commit suicide but was indeed MURDERED by someone…IN THAT POST DINER! and now..the Ghost of Tommy haunts the diner. The Flies, the rats, all spawn due to his presence. What they surely didn’t tell you was when all the blood came down the walls. Of course I base this on no facts but I’ve seen enough horror movies to know I am on to something

every now and then when you walk by the post…you can see from the corner of your eye Tommy making pancakes…slowly turn his head…and grin.

Rest in Peace Tommy my friend…you were the whole damn diner.

Yeah sure shakedown.. Some people prefer to eat crap and think it is food. You all can easily prepare any food that is being served in these rat holes, and make it whole lot better.

When I first moved to Sunnyside several years ago, I visited New Post and found it unclean and the food horrible. However, it seems to have changed management over the last few years with a revamped menu. I have visited a couple of times, and while it’s not my favorite diner and I did find the prices too high, the food and cleanliness was notably improved. I frankly don’t know, however, why people patronize Pete’s Grill and New Post when Foxy’s has superior food at lower prices and nice service.

I love the Post and frankly I think it’s one of the better diners in the neighborhood. When we have guests visiting from Europe this is the single most popular place with them. They love the authentic, old-style diner look; the love that they serve both Irish breakfast and Mexican specialties. We do miss Tommy, the old grill man, but the guys behind the counter (are they all related?) are awesome.

I’m sure they’ll get their act together and reopen soon.

I saw a sign at Lodati Park yesterday, “Coming Soon – Filth Flies”. I wonder if there is a connection?
