New Pizzeria to Open on 49th Street

A new pizzeria is opening on 49th Street at the same location where Pizza Dealz operated.

The pizzeria, to be called “Uncle Jimmy’s Pizza,” will be located at 41-10 49th Street and is expected to open mid way through next week.

The owner is Jimmy Canarozzi, a life-long Sunnyside Gardens resident, who bought Pizza Dealz (which included the ovens, a 10-year lease, etc.) after it was listed for sale in September.

Canarozzi said he is putting together a fairly basic menu– with all items sold at reasonable prices. “It’s not going to be 99 cents [a slice], but we are not going to bang anyone over the head either.”

“Opening a pizzeria is something I have always wanted to do,” Canarozzi said. Opening one in Sunnyside, he said, is particularly special since “I’m a neighborhood kind of a guy.”

Canarozzi has worked in the building industry for most of his life and plans to make the leap into the pizza business full time.  He has brought on pizza maker.

The pizzeria is approx 500 square feet, with room for about 6 stools customers.

A pizzeria was established in this location at the beginning of 2012, when it was called 99c Fresh Pizza. The name was soon changed to Pizza Dealz.

Sunnysider, what do you know? I worked at an Italian eatery, and the guy making the (great) pizza was NOT the owner. Not even the head chef.

Seriously guys – how many owners actually make the pizza? This guy isn’t stupid (quite the contrary) and will have only the best making his pizza, and ensuring his investment runs smoothly.

I for one wish him the very best of luck and good fortune. Delighted to see someone going after their dream 🙂 and putting their money where their mouth is!

I’m a little concerned that the guy who bought it seems to have no experience making pizza or owning a pizzeria. More of a fantasy than anything. Wish him best of luck, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Exactly! Mama Mia-how can it be so difficult to have a great pizza experience in Sunnyside!

Why didn’t Nick’s in Forest Hills open a place here?

Sounds this poor guy hasn’t a clue (like Lenny’s) and he’ll lose money and it will be shut down in a few months.

Not posting to be malicious but in sadness but maybe it will encourage you to seek rescue from the people at Nick’s or elsewhere who know something about great pizza.

Don’t worry about the toppings. Bring back some old NY flavor back and you will be successful in no time. Think Italian Brooklyn style slices reppin’ Sunnyside Queens!

Spaghetti pizza, a treat rarely seen in these parts, would make this store a destination pizza place.

Find the guy who ran Rosario’s and get the recipe for THAT pizza. It was the best, and I’ve been sad ever since Rosario’s closed.

Best of Luck ……..you have a lot of work to make a big change there the former place never wanted to deliver or when they did it would take over a hour to deliver or they would not even take the orders unless it was on restaurant.com

Lawmakers secure federal funding to combat flooding in Queens after impact of Hurricane Ida and other storms

U.S. Congresswomen Grace Meng and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, announced on Jan. 7 that President Joe Biden has signed their legislation into law to address severe flooding in Queens.

The measure aims to mitigate future disasters like those caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021, which inundated the borough with record-shattering rainfall.

Op-ed | New York’s ground lease co-ops: Our families can’t wait any longer

Jan. 14, 2025 By Michael Tang

Last December brought a long-awaited victory for New York City. Our City Council adopted the historic City of Yes housing plan, paving the way for more than 80,000 new homes by 2040 with the promise of affordability. As a longtime resident of Flushing, Queens, I naturally welcomed the news – it’s a much-needed reprieve for New Yorkers as housing costs continue to soar in the midst of an unparalleled housing crisis. But entering 2025 on the heels of this win, we residents at  Murray Hill Cooperative remain at risk — our lives are virtually unchanged because we belong to the last class of unprotected “tenants” as ground lease co-op residents. Without legislative action, more than 25,000 New Yorkers face the threat of losing their homes — homes that we own — to landowners seeking to raise our ground rent to astronomical rates.
