More Than 6,300 Ballots Left to be Counted in Contentious Queens DA Race

June 27, 2019 By Laura Hanrahan

With several thousand absentee and paper ballots left to be counted in Queens District Attorney Democratic primary, Borough President Melinda Katz has not yet conceded to insurgent candidate Tiffany Cabán.

Cabán, who earned a slight lead over Katz of 1,090 votes with 98 percent of precincts reporting, declared victory over the career politician on Tuesday evening shortly after 11 p.m.

Katz appears to be holding out hope that the uncounted affidavit, absentee and military ballots will swing the election in her favor.

“You have to count every vote,” Katz said on election night.

Early reports suggested that there were roughly 3,400 uncounted votes, however a new report from The City states that the Board of Elections (BOE) has claimed the number is closer to 6,300 and is expected to grow in the coming days as more absentee ballots come through the mail.

The Board of Elections did not respond to requests for comment.

While Katz is remaining optimistic, it is likely that the posted ballots will not change the results of election night. The votes are expected to be split amongst the seven names on the ticket, including Council Member Rory Lancman who dropped out of the race just days before the election—after some absentee ballots would have already been mailed.

The BOE began the process of recounting machine votes earlier today, CBS reported, to ensure the accuracy of Tuesday night’s results. The absentee and paper ballots will be counted over the coming days and may not be completed until Wednesday, July 3.

Cabán, a 31-year old public defender, is reportedly in talks to hire prominent election lawyer Jerry Goldfelder to handle the ballot count, according to The City.

I voted for Lasak. If he ends up running on the GOP line, I’ll vote for him again.

Some of the people who voted for Caban have no idea what they’re in for, or how bad things are going to get should she win. Roosevelt Avenue will turn into the country’s biggest red-light district, and the wolves will come out and break the law with impunity.

White transplants living in Astoria priced out of the trendiest parts of Brooklyn are what put Caban over the top by a margin of 2,000 votes. The entirety of Queens will suffer because of their idiocy. The moment things get bad they will scurry back to Ohio and Iowa and Minnesota, and people who actually live in New York will be left holding the bag.

Is there any evidence of that at all?

Is there a single reason to believe your opinion? You’ve presented zero facts.

Go check out the breakdowns by district, the only parts where Tiffany won by a large margin was the districts in Astoria. Every other district she came in second place or worse. The 1500 extra votes she got in Astoria is what actually put her over the top.

So...no evidence at all

Interesting opinion about something else.

Is there a single reason to believe that “White transplants living in Astoria priced out of the trendiest parts of Brooklyn are what put Caban over the top by a margin of 2,000 votes” specifically? Or just blind speculation?

Caban, another socialist pro illegals wants no jails and close Rikers. So while awaiting trial anyone who stabbed, robbed, rapped, murdered, assaulted will be free roaming the streets. Katz is no different, she flipped flopped so she can get more votes, baked by Cuomo who is pro jails in boroughs closing Rikers and illegals. NY is becoming a 3rd world state, just let everyone in, no medical checks, bring on diseases, ok to urinate on streets, defecate, smoke weed, punch and steal, police won’t do anything cause they don’t want to get involved and accused of racism with no reason as this is the go to for the ones breaking the law. The public sector who is supposed to protect its law abiding citizens pushing socialist agenda so they appeal to masses who are”oppressed”. In the heard everyone is equal, while they are getting rich but want to make everyone else equal, equally poor and keep you that way.

Caban will send Queens spiraling down the drain. Hopefully sanity prevails and anybody but her wins.

I would be careful here,- they are trying to steal the election from Tif Caban.. How long does it take to count votes? Who is monitoring this? A total recount, the provenance of these mail in votes, absentee votes, residency requirements should be looked into, etc. Amazing.

C’mon, Nobody’s stealing the election. Cabán may well have won, but that’s not final until all the paper ballots are counted and certified.

Don’t you come here with logic and common sense. Maybe we’ll still have a general election just for shits and giggles.

Cabán has to worry. Joe Crowley appointee everyone at the Queens Board of Elex , Araujo is a Crowley lackey -as well as attorney Bolz and Reich – camp Crowley are desperate for Katz to win so they can continue corruption. If Cabán loses – it needs to be carefully investigated!

Cabán shouldn’t be worried. Each side will get to oversee the paper ballot count per the Queens BOE. From their website:

“The preliminary Election “results” reported on Election Night are just that—preliminary. New York State Election Law requires a complete recanvass of all votes cast on Election Day and the counting of all valid absentee, affidavit, and military ballots before the Election Results can be certified.”

Don’t put anything past Crowley’s appointees – they all owe their jobs to Crowley and always did as they were told – team caban needs to verify that each voter actuality exists and no double counting etc s don’t trust Crowley camp – he wants to cling on to any influence he has in Queens and Katz is beholden to him.

Cabán needs to worry !
Crowley Reich Bolz Sweeney they have spent decades kicking any opponents off ballots and controlling who got elected – they are the only reason Crowley stayed on office for so long – he is not talented – any challenger could have outwit him – but no one got a chance and they underestimated Ocasio-Cortez-

If Katz wins – -every ballot should be checked ! Deeply !

Absentee and Military Ballots had to be postmarked by June 24 and received at the Queens Board of Elections by July 2.

Check out ALL the ballots.

Oh lily

Katz could win
I suspect she will get majority of absentee ballots
Some of the other candidates would be lucky to get more than a couple

Get over it? Not a good strategy to reach out to those who didn’t vote for Cabán.

If Caban wins she will have won with about 5% of the total eligible vote. She’ll need to reach out 95% of the Democrats who didn’t vote for her.

Homeless men charged in deadly 7 train subway brawl in Woodside: DA

Three homeless men were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday and variously charged with felony robbery, attempted gang assault, and assault for allegedly stealing the belongings of a 69-year-old homeless man who was asleep on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Woodside early Sunday morning.

The victim woke up and tried to regain his property. During the ensuing brawl, the victim fatally stabbed a 37-year-old assailant and slashed a second man. The victim has not been charged in the fatal stabbing. The investigation by the NYPD’s Queens Homicide Squad and members of the 108th Precinct in Long Island City remains ongoing.
