More than 200 students at PS 12 in Woodside stayed home from school Thursday following the outbreak of a stomach virus, according to officials.

The stomach bug known as norovirus has sickened scores of children at the school.

The Department of Education said that 130 students were absent from the 42-00 72nd Street school on Wednesday and 210 Thursday. The school has about 1,275 students.

Department of Health officials were disinfecting the K-5 school Thursday and would be continuing to do so through the weekend.

Norovirus is the most common food borne disease in the U.S. and accounts for 19 million to 21 million cases a year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and stomach pain and are usually not fatal.

I believe the kitchen was checked a long with staff , and it was not the kitchens fault. But if parents keeps sending there kids to school sick , off coarse its going to spread from kid to kid. . A little consideration for others is needed

Someone in the cafeteria kitchen probably forgot to wash their hands while preparing lunch.

“and are usually not fatal.” I’m hoping this is just a case of bad writing, and that this disease is a lot less fatal than this makes it sound.

This is terrible. Was it something in their food? 200 kids won’t all catch by coincidence or via air. I hope they investigate and find the cause, those poor kids, I feel really bad for them and for their parents. Wish them all the best and speedy recovery. I just hope to god non of those poor kids have any immune system issues or serious conditions that could be really bad for them to have norovirus.

Yes, its contracted when poopy is in food or water. They probably have to scrub the whole school.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Monday that 74 firearms were taken off the streets at the Greater Allen A.M.E.
