Right after Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast, many New Yorkers volunteered their time and money to relief efforts.
But one Sunnyside man, Mickey McCreesh, has helped those affected in the Rockaways and Breezy Point every Saturday since the first weekend after the storm. While McCreesh has a cultural connection to many Rockaways and Breezy Point residents, he says it’s not just abovimeo.comut helping other Irish. Everybody, no matter their background, needs help. And that’s who Sunnyside volunteers are helping. Everyone they can.

Good man Mick show them what your made off !!
The Irish who volunteered to join the British in fighting the Nazis were treated badly by the Irish government when they returned and that has only RECENTLY BEEN OFFICIALLY recognized by the government and that is a sad fact. Facts are tough things to deal with. So, MajorLaser, it is you who have something to learn!
Sunnysider:
My point again is simple…..This “Micky” lives in an area almost unaffected by the storm. Yet he chooses to help….he does not stand aloof. Perhaps throughout history if others had the same “Chutzpah” the world would be a much better place. My comments were not meant to offend you…..your input is valuable as is every person.
Well done Mickey McCreesh.
@Sunnysider Well said.
Yes, you pointed out the virtue of Irish people, and then made a whopping, completely uncalled for generalization about the rest of Europe. What the heck did you think was going to happen? If you think your statement was innocent, think again.
I’m disappointed that every topic on this board eventually turns into a stupid, childish argument because some people here can’t thrive without attention. I don’t even bother to read the comments anymore because of the rampant immaturity.
What does WW2 have to do with the struggle of the Irish people and the kindness of this man “Micky”. I merely made a point that if only one person stands up to help or defend another; that simple act can beget a movement. Is it “pollution” or “trolling” to point out the virtue of the Irish people and this man in particular? I agree with one point “educate” yourselves….read up on the famine, the holacaust….visit Rockaway, lend a hand. So many holidays are upon us Hannukah and Kwanzaa,etc. Start the New Year with a good deed and kind heart.
The Truth is, that although Ireland was neutral, DeValeras Govt did side albeit very quietly, with The Allies. For all those on here polluting this story about Helping New Yorkers with ww2 rubbish, read “The Cranborne Report” from Lord Cranborne regarding Irish “Help” during the war.
I have enclosed the wikipedia link for you who are morons.

There are too many people who have Posted BS regarding this non topic to name and shame. So I hope the least they can do is Read and Learn.
Good on Mickey Mc. And I hope the rest of you who are whinging about ww2 go to hell.
Thomas, the Irish government did not help the Allies during WWII. That is a very sad fact although there were many VOLUNTEERS who were treated MISERABLY when they returned to Ireland after the war.
My goodness….why the invective. The Irish suffered through a holacaust of thier own during the 19th century. Only through courage, moral fortitude were they able to survive. The popualtion of Ireland even to this day has never recovered from the devastation of the famine….resulting in a great Irish migration to all parts of the world. I’m labeled a “troll” for comparing their struugles to that of the Jewsih people? That one member of their community gives selflessly to help those in need while others stand by? Again thank you “Micky”
I suspect that Thomas is just a troll. His intent was to hijack this story and steer the comments toward a negative place that have nothing to do with the initial story. Sadly, everyone fell for it.
The Irish government lowered the flag at half mast when Hitler committed suicide. Very nice! They were “neutral” and stigmatized and persecuted the thousands of Irishmen who volunteered and joined the British army to fight the Nazis. The behavior of the Irish government during WWII was disgusting to say the least. Their hatred of the Brits was stronger than their love of humanity. As for “Jon”, don’t tell me about the “children of Gaza” who are used as HUMAN SHIELDS by their hateful, anti-Semitic parents.
@Thomas
What exactly are you referring to about Ireland’s “moral fortitude” in WW2?
There were plenty of Irish-Americans that stormed Omaha Beach and other battlefields to bring down Hitler – that is certainly true, but Ireland as a country did squat. I recall that Ireland even entertained the thought of letting German U-boats dock in Cork until Churchill promised to have the RAF level the place.
Congrats to Mickey at Bar 43!!! I have seen him every Saturday with a packed van! I am very proud of the good people of Sunnyside and the Irish/Irish-American communities who have really stepped up and made us proud!! Merry Christmas to everyone!!!!
My Hero Mr Mc Creesh, well done Mickey and all the men and women who helped out. You will be rewarded in the future, what goes around comes around.
Thomas, do you realise that Ireland was NEUTRAL in the second world war? Never stood up to the Nazi’s. Never openly supported the Allies.
Mickey deserves so much praise but not because of his nationality but because he has selflessly committed to helping people, all people, because he saw the need.
Thomas. Don’t get me started about the children of Gaza and the occupation… let’s talk about the positive things.
I admire you Mikey. Makes me proud to be from Sunnyside.
That is so thoughtful and kind of Mickey. You’ve done a wonderful thing Mickey!!! Thomas…you could of left out your statement about how the rest of Europe sucks don’t you think? ESPECIALLY under an article about someone that says he’s helping EVERYONE. Your ignorant statement is irrelevant to this story.
If the rest of Europe had the moral fortitude of the Irish people during WW2′ the holacaust would’ve never occured. Six million lost. Thank you Mr. McCreesh you are a kind , generous and thoughtful member of the community.
