Man sought for grand larceny targeting snoozing 7 train rider in Woodside: NYPD

Police from the 108th Precinct in Long Island City and Transit District 20 are investigating a grand larceny that took place on a Flushing-bound 7 train on the morning of Sunday, July 14.

A 41-year-old man had fallen asleep on the subway and woke up as the train pulled into the 61st Street-Roosevelt Avenue station in Woodside at around 6:30 a.m. when he noticed both of his pockets were cut open and his wallet was missing.

An unidentified man had approached the victim as he slept and removed property from him before exiting the train in Woodside, where he fled in an unknown direction, police said. The victim was not injured during the incident.

The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect on Tuesday and described him as having a dark complexion with a medium build. He wore a black Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap, a black T-shirt, black Nike sweatpants and black and yellow sneakers.

Through July 14, the 108th Precinct has reported 383 grand larcenies so far in 2024, 26 fewer than the 409 reported at the same point last year, a decline of 6.4%, according to the most recent CompStat report. Transit crimes are way down in the 108th Precinct with 29 reported through July 14, 23 fewer than the 52 reported during the same point in 2023, a decline of 44.2%, according to CompStat.
