LIC: Ribbon Cut On Borough’s First Planned Parenthood Center

May 18, 2015 By Jackie Strawbridge

Supporters of Planned Parenthood turned out in Long Island City this morning to cut the ribbon on what will be the organization’s first center in Queens.

A lively crowd of more than 50 people convened at the 21-41 45th Road facility, which is expected to open mid June. There was no sign of protestors.

The opening of the Queens facility represents a milestone for Planned Parenthood since it will now have centers in all five boroughs. The organization estimates that 5,400 of its current patients are Queens residents who are commuting to other boroughs to use its services.

The new facility will offer reproductive health services including abortions, gynecological care, cancer screenings, birth control and health insurance screening and enrollment.

Joan Malin, PPNYC President and CEO, called the new center is “truly transformational for us.”

“We very much see ourselves as [a] partner in meeting the needs of this extraordinarily wonderful place, home to so many languages and new communities,” Malin said. “We want to be part of that experience.”

The facility, which is 14,000 square feet, has been named the Diane L. Max Health Center, after the PPNYC Board Chair, a champion of its construction. Max said she felt it was “essential” to bring services to the diverse and rapidly growing Queens community.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who allocated $750,000 of city funds toward the new center, said, “the borough of Queens is better and safer today because Planned Parenthood is here.”

“This is one of the most beautiful buildings in my district,” he added. “It is so full of light, and air, and color, and it’s really all about hope.”

PPNYC expects that the new center will serve about 17,500 patients per year.

very interesting that once again the debate around abortion is being hashed out by men. plannned parenthood helps to educate people — both men and women (and teen boys and girls) — and provides reproductive health services for those seeking it. they do amazing work and provide a LEGAL, SAFE services to those who need it.

Give me a break! PP promotes promiscuity and abortion is not safe for babies – and women have died during LEGAL abortions – without the abortionists being prosecuted since Planned Parenthood covers up for its crimes.s I happen to a be a woman, by the way. And you seem to think that men do not have the right to an opinion. It takes two to tango, Kay baby.

Scary but I think that Peter P may have a point when you state that you have been around JVB about 100 times a year? Why is “Give me Liberty” a hypocrite? Do you realize that if abortion had been as acceptable 50 years ago as it is today….and the gene for homosexuality discovered…you and JVB might have been aborted because some Quack would have told your mothers that you both would be born mentally ill.
You need to think for yourself….slow down …stop calling people names

It is disgusting that our TAX DOLLARS are being used to fund a depraved organization, the largest provider of abortions in the United States. This is a group that disdains crisis pregnancy center and believes that it is all right for a woman who is in the third trimester of a pregnancy to have an abortion. It also has no problem with underaged girls having abortions without the knowledge of the parents. The bread and butter of PP is abortion. It is not about “women’s health”. That is a fig leaf to cover up the misdeeds that go on inside its so-called “clinics”.

Reply
Sharon Beth Long

Planned Parenthood is on a “collision course with itself” Although less than 10% of their visits by patients nationwide may be abortions, abortions bring in more than 30% of their clinical income. Since they are required to accept all insurance, medicaid, and take people for free for birth control on which they lose money they look to abortion to close the funding gap. See the book Unplanned by Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director. This is largely why they are requiring all their chapters to provide abortions. I the early nineties, according to the New York Times, Planned Parenthood’s Margaret Sanger clinic in Greenwich Village did not even provide birth control; it was not “renumerative”
Although perhaps the local volunteer or even local Planned Parenthood worker believes that their birth control program in preventing abortion my own research in graduate school showed that between 1975-1982 although the government money after inflation was taken into account spent on family planning programs in New York State, much of it going to Planned Parenthood, more than doubled abortion continued to increase as a proportion of the fertile women in the state. Planned Parenthood is also one of the major political advocates of abortion nationwide
Under our new mayor, although he talks a good line about helping low income people has done nothing to raise welfare payments and people who work in the housing industry tell me that his plan to help developers build low income units will be ineffective in most cases.
Women have abortions not because they have a choice but because they do not have a choice. It’s a tragedy that all we can offer to women having unplanned pregnancies is abortion. Women deserve better.

@Moishe You’re far from someone who thinks or “posts” objectively. You keep bring up the Medical establishments classification and labeling of Homosexuality, you obviously missed a huge chunk of my post to Peter P, I’ll past it here and hold your obsessive hand but again. ” After the preaching of Thomas Aquinas in early 1300’s religious teachings soon were incorporated into legal sanctions. Many of the early American colonies, for example, enacted stiff criminal penalties for sodomy, an umbrella term that encompassed a wide variety of sexual acts that were nonprocreative (including homosexual behavior), occurred outside of marriage (e.g., sex between a man and woman who were not married), or violated traditions (e.g., sex between husband and wife with the woman on top). The statutes often described such conduct only in Latin or with oblique phrases such as “wickedness not to be named”). In some places, such as the New Haven colony, male and female homosexual acts were punishable by death (e.g., Katz, 1976). This is how the Homosexuality classification came about in medical books and one of the very reason for its removal from medical books. Go out and do a little research on the topic you’re horribly ignorant on this topic. You also appear to self loathing.

@Moishe Ignorant means uninformed and unaware as defined by dictionary dot com. This is something you constantly display in your posts, idiot I didn’t your sexual preference nor do I care. Please define your definition of forcing a point of view on others. Provide an example as well. I will use the words in the English language in accordance to the rules of the English language. When someone is uniformed and unaware they are ignorant. Go look it up idiot. You don’t need to be a historian or great speller but you do need to be informed if you’re not informed or won’t allow yourself to be informed that makes you ignorant by definition of the word. Its not how I feel or what I believe but what the definition of the word is plain an simple. If a devout, pro life, atheist, or anyone else spews uninformed drivel and ignore facts they will be called ignorant for that reason alone not because they exercised their right to free speech. You’re ridiculous.

Reply

@Moishe That definition of proclivity is from Webster’s or Dictionary dot com or one them. I pulled the definition in response to this quote by Peter P “This is a guy who openly flaunts his sexual proclivities, champion of the little guy ” the underdog”, protector of human rights, lover of perversion and decandence (sic)” I think he meant “decadence” I have met and seen JVB easily over hundred times over the years at Bliss Restaurant, Tropical Isle, his office on Queens Blvd. Charitable Benefits, City Hall etc. I pulled the definition because it is way out of context. Unless PeterP has actually had sex with the guy or spoke someone who has he could not know his “proclivities”. Gay (homosexual) is adjective not the noun. Proclivity (noun) is defined in previous post. I also want to know what he means by “openly flaunts”. I have never seen the man openly flaunt anything. Does “openly flaunt” mean living “openly gay” to Peter P? Peter P then went on to point to the old mental illness designation to further persecute his target. He obviously didn’t know how this designation came about. The “diagnosis of ignorant” for Peter P is dead on. I rest my case and would like to throw in the word persecutor to diagnosis.

Reply
MOISHE

Wow Mac….how educated you are! Did you pull up that history lesson on Wikipedia …..I think the definition of proclivity was dead on….especially with regard to the context of which it was used by that racist Peter. Does’nt mean I agree with him. You see having a different opinion does not make one ignorant so long as there is a logic behind it. Yes homosexuality was considered deviant….thats a fact. So what about 600 years ago….Again I don’t agree with that point of view but others much more educated than I advocate that diagnosis.
Personally I find both you and Peter P distasteful individuals.

@Seth We see you don’t travel very much. Check out Idaho, Kentucky and West Virginia and tell me the majority in the homeless shelters are not white. As for your ignorant ethnic cleansing remark. Here is a math equation you dimwit. Giuliani responded by citing a statistic from a 2010 Bureau of Justice Statistics report which did, indeed, conclude that 93 percent of black homicide victims from 1980 through 2008 were killed by black offenders. The statement implied that intraracial violence in black communities is uniquely bad. Giuliani later repeated this statistic in a FOX News interview. A Black male has a 1 in 21 chance of being murdered in his lifetime by age 65 (ref: Author Benjamin P Bowser and CDC) 93% of these men will be killed by other Black males, who the mass majority of these murderers are products of unwanted pregnancy.according to FBI and CDC. I know math and facts don’t matter to someone who doesn’t believe in science buts its one of factors used to help my determination. My determination is you’re the one condoning “ethnic cleansing” and my position is one that is curbing it. I know facts and statistics (reality) don’t matter much to an ignorant chest pounding self righteous blowhard. I don’t think any shame should fall on JVB but on you and your ignorance. pro·cliv·i·ty
prōˈklivədē,prəˈklivədē/
noun
plural noun: proclivities
a tendency to choose or do something regularly; an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing.
“a proclivity for hard work”
Is being heterosexual a form of proclivity?

Before the High Middle Ages, homosexual acts appear to have been tolerated or ignored by the Christian church throughout Europe. Beginning in the latter twelfth century, however, hostility toward homosexuality began to take root, and eventually spread throughout European religious and secular institutions. Condemnation of homosexual acts (and other nonprocreative sexual behavior) as “unnatural,” which received official expression in the writings of Thomas Aquinas and others, became widespread and has continued through the present day (Boswell, 1980).
Religious teachings soon were incorporated into legal sanctions.

By the end of the 19th century, medicine and psychiatry were effectively competing with religion and the law for jurisdiction over sexuality. As a consequence, discourse about homosexuality expanded from the realms of sin and crime to include that of pathology. This historical shift was generally considered progressive because a sick person was less blameful than a sinner or criminal (e.g., Chauncey, 1982/1983; D’Emilio & Freedman, 1988; Duberman, Vicinus, & Chauncey, 1989).

Even within medicine and psychiatry, however, homosexuality was not universally viewed as a pathology. Richard von Krafft-Ebing described it as a degenerative sickness in his Psychopathia Sexualis, but Sigmund Freud and Havelock Ellis both adopted more accepting stances. Early in the twentieth century, Ellis (1901) argued that homosexuality was inborn and therefore not immoral, that it was not a disease, and that many homosexuals made outstanding contributions to society (Robinson, 1976).

Peter P That is why Homosexuality was deemed a mental illness. Please get informed. If you want to remain ignorant then keep your comments to yourself this way people don’t realize you’re ignorant they just think you’re just quiet and mindful.

This is nice, I hope more people took advantage of these clinics instead of assuming they have no other choice. It’s sad that we only hear about this here, instead of posters and flyers around the neighborhood.

Abortion is legal because the government declares the baby as not a person. So a class of humanity can be killed by another class of humanity. That was the logic for slavery in the US and for 1940’s Germany.

Craic Dealer – you never fail to come up with stupid comments. Comparing abortion to enslaving a people and murdering a group of people. You are a true idiot. Are you and your friends going to bomb this place?

El loco: Your comments prove that you belong on the playground with 6 year olds that happened to not be aborted. Maybe the higher brained discussions can be saved for the humans. Run along, boy.

Aaaaaaand only one comment in before the anti-choice neanderthals who are too feeble-minded to understand what Planned Parenthood actually do crawl out of their cave. Put your head back up your “craic,” where it usually stays

@Craic Dealer Your warped thinking on the issue is just ridiculous. This was not at all the logic for slavery in the US or 1940’s Germany. Pick up a history book you uninformed blowhard. Oh you may want to consult the Bible on these issues as well you Fox informed chest pounding fool. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Gen 2:7

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT). You blowhards are the first to yell and scream about the cost of an unwanted child to society in the form of taxes and social breakdown. Take your ignorant uninformed chest pounding crusade some place else we’re tied of hearing you self righteous phonies.

Mac: Haha! Where’s the logic in your emotional rant? As a US Constitutionalist/BIll of Rights Member (completely different from sheeple Republicans), you may want to bring some substance. The bible… LOL!

Why not rant about Roe V Wade? LOL Maybe because Democrats are sheelpe as well.

Its great to only have a two party system because its easier to control.

@Craic Hahaha Nice but very weak try. I am responding to your post specifically. You know the one confusing “class” and “generation”. Sorry silly but I graduated college a long long time ago and debating these issues were laid to rest back then. I know Fox News likes to keep its followers abreast in dead issues to help retard their mental capacity even more. Enjoy Benghazi. Hahahaha

Craic Dealer

@ Mac: The issue is that the courts were unsettled to decide if a baby in the womb is a person or not so they decided that it isn’t a person rather than it is a person. An abortion is also legal because they said that there is privacy between doctor and patient. Like an owner of a slave (private property) was in US history. Like a Jewish business owner in 1940’s German.

When can the government say YOU’RE not a person, Mac?

When obstetricians are first taught about delivery they’re told that there are two patients; the mother and baby.

Mac

@Craic Dealer
Your quote to el loco was “Maybe the higher brained discussions can be saved for the humans. Run along, boy.” Your quote”Mother and baby”? is how I simplified the topic of human reproduction to my children when they asked questions as very young children Hahaha How arrogant are you? Your posts seems to be pretty adolescent in context. You still feel superior enough to insult el loco. The medical and legal term even when obstetricians are first taught is “Fetal viability” which depends largely on the fetal organ maturity, and environmental conditions.

According to Websters Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language, viability of a fetus means having reached such a stage of development as to be capable of living, under normal conditions, outside the uterus. Viability exists as a function of bio-medical and technological capacities, which are different in different parts of the world. As a consequence, there is, at the present time, no worldwide, uniform gestational age that defines viability.

@Mac: Great copying and pasting to avoid the point! Help us all if you’re actually spawning. When the sperm meets the egg there is a creation of a human genome that is the genetic start of a person. If the founding documents state life, libert and property you have zero hope if you can’t even defend the defensless.

Today, Mac, you’re a person. Tomorrow you’re NOT a person because… maybe of your income or life style.

Mac

@craic dealer You and your posts are ridiculous. Just absurd. Thank “God” for the anonymity of the internet or you could really publicly humiliate yourself.

craic…..the #1 reason women need abortions is…………….they willingly have unprotected sex with a DEADBEAT.

and most women know he is a DEADBEAT so women need to grow up and learn how to have sex with real men, who would MAN UP and support the potential child.

or you can ban abortions and pay way WAY more taxes to support them on welfare and to hire more cops since crime would go up. Enjoy!! ROFL!
