Irish Immigrant And Woodside Resident Turns Himself In Following Fatal Bar Fight

Steven O’Brien (stevenob27)

Nov. 23, 2018 By Christian Murray

A 25-year-old Woodside man turned himself into police this morning after fatally punching a fellow Irish immigrant at the Gaslight Bar in Sunnyside Thursday, police said.

Steven O’Brien, who lives on 42nd Street in Woodside, has been charged with assault, after killing 21-year-old John “Danny” McGee with a single punch to the head outside the 43-17 Queens Blvd bar.

O’Brien, who is from Dublin, and McGee, from Longford, allegedly got into an argument outside the pub at around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday, police said.

O’Brien, a bartender in Manhattan, allegedly punched McGee in the head and then fled the scene.

McGee, meanwhile, fell to the pavement in a heap. He was later pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.

McGee had been working in New York for the past 18 months, according to Irish media reports. He was an American citizen who frequently came to New York.

McGee was from a high-profile family in the village of Drumlish, a rural area with about 400 people. He was a talented Gaelic football and soccer player.

Quite a bit of hate going on here, and Anti-Irish sentiment also. This was not the first fight on Queens Blvd. at 4am, and it most certainly will not be the last one. Unfortunately this ended in tragedy for one family, and a near collapse for another family. It was an awful thing to happen, and everyone from the bartender, to the group of friends present, to the heartbroken families will never be the same again. Of course everyone assumes the victim and his assailant were both here illegally, this may not be the case. Even if they were here illegally what bearing does that have on the death of the young man? The bar owners need to provide security especially on nights like NYE, T.Giving Eve, and Paddy’s Day.

Re: Geo Kelly post of 11/26/18. My wife grew up on 50th St behind the Knights of Columbus building in Sunnyside and I know that the old Sunnyside Gardens Sports Arena (made famous by Cinderella Man, Jim Braddock) was at 44th Street & Queens Blvd. I’ve got believe folks living just 3-4 blocks north of Queens Blvd must have claimed Sunnysider status, too. It couldnt be just the 40 square blocks south of Greenpoint Avenue because the arena would have been a block outside of your boundary. Was it misnamed? Were the true Southies of yesteryear angered by the stadium’s ripoff of their name?

The literal historic district is on Skillman, but you don’t think anyone above QB lives in Sunnyside? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(also, why are you yelling?)

Sorry George, but Sunnyside Gardens is not Woodside. And it was heavily Irish when I moved here 30+ years ago.

Why are you using the immigrant terminology. This is New York. Everyone is welcome here. We do not discriminate based on nationality. Stop inflaming an issue that only brings trouble. Yes I am white, but all of my relatives are from South America. There is no place in our society to discriminate because someone looks different. We celebrate who we are. Not who we are not. You are an awful reporter.

Thanks for some other magnificent article.

Where else may anyone get that kind of info in such a perfect approach of writing?
I have a presentation next week, and I’m at the look for such info.

Booze and fights go together, beer muscles. Legalize weed and the worst that’ll happen is that a crowd with the munchies takes over White Castle, eats and falls asleep.

Legalize everything?

So you are going to have to deal with potheads IN ADDITION to drunks. Perfect. Why not legalize concealed carry and coke while you are at it?

Here is the Truth.

Our neighborhood is FULL of potheads. You smell it on every block. and court yard is known as coke yard… also concealed carry is legal in NY with a concealed carry license…

Please let’s not play the stupid card….Regardless of color or race, whether undocumented or not, an intoxicated person is an irrational and dangerous person. Attention NYPD: post a couple of patrol officers outside the bars and prevent the violence. Maybe start issuing summonses with hefty penalties to the bartenders/owners who don’t serve responsibly. Arrest all the drunken idiots, give them hefty fines as well as community service. A little common sense goes a long way and will ultimately save lives.

Police should take a look at the bars on Skillman especially the Kettle where women have been harassed.

Why because we don’t have an overwhelming problem with the Irish committing crimes and illegally trafficking drugs into this country and because they come by plane not over our borders.

Yes, we do have a problem with Irish crime and we have for years. Especially alcohol and drugs involved JJ. Maybe you should open up your eyes.

You’re correct Luis. It’s not just Mexicans causing problems. Dominicans, Salvadorans, & Guatemalans, just to name a few, are big trouble as well.

Not once it crosses Greenpoint Avenue it isn’t. I lived one block down and it was a real pain in the arse to go to the 61st Street post office to pick up packages.

Is the perpetrator here legally or it doesn’t matter because he’s white?

The media loves to assume every brown immigrant in this country is here illegally, but turns a blind eye to all the illegal Irish and Eastern Europeans hiding in NYC and Boston working construction and restaurant jobs.

It does matter. This city is too crowded. I don’t care if it’s a Black guy from Africa or white woman from Ohio go somewhere else!

Because there aren’t 11 million illegal Irish and Eastern European immigrants. That’s why people focus on the “brown” ones. Don’t be dense.

If they have nothing to say because they’re white, why are there 3 different articles about the situation in the Sunnyside Post alone?

What a brave social warrior you are. Won’t even leave your name “JH resident”. Whats it matter, a young man is dead, and you take this as an opportunity to wine about your own baloney. Go back to your mothers basement and clean your room.

Some more crap to read !!!

Some more crap to read !!!

Nonwhites commit 89 percent of all crime in New York City, including 97.7 percent of all shootings, 96 percent of all robberies, 94.2 percent of all murders, 94.9 percent of all Juvenile Felony and Misdemeanor crimes, and 90.6 percent of all rapes. And it sure is not Asian… leaving the 2 other groups you say have a lot of crap said about them…

You are correct. A lot of bars have this mentality. They are totally liable too. Bars should lose their liquor license for condoning this kind of behavior and for over serving bar patrons.

My brother used to hang at the gaslight in the 80’s. He spent 4 years drinking there, and he was still underage after those 4 years.
