The Department of Sanitation is hosting a children’s bike swap as part of an outdoor fair aimed at educating children about recycling in Long Island City Saturday.
DonateNYC, an initiative of DSNY, is holding the “Kids Reuse Fair” focusing on recycling, swapping and reusing babies’ and kids’ items with CultureLab LIC at the Plaxall Gallery, located at 5-25 46th Ave. from noon to 4 p.m.
The free event, part of the department’s NYCxReuse programming, also offers a variety of educational activities and lessons, arts & crafts, a donation drive and a bicycle swap.
For the bike swap, the organizer, Kids Ride Club, is inviting parents to bring bikes that their children have outgrown to swap with other parents. Children will be fitted with a proper sized bike and helmet and at 3:30 p.m. Kids Ride Club will give away safety-inspected bikes to those unable to swap. Bike clothing and accessories will also be sold for $5 an item.
Parents are also invited to bring gently used, clean plastic toys to the fair to donate to children in need. Second Chance Toys is collecting the toys and will deliver them to children in need for the holidays. The effort aims to keep plastic toys out of landfills and teaches children generosity.
Participants can also pick up a free reusable bag and coloring bag, play the “follow your waste” e-game and complete educational games and activities for prizes.
The event is free and open to the public.
