Department of Consumer Affairs charges Major World, alleges auto-dealer uses deceptive sales tactics

GMaps

March 16, By Christian Murray

The Department of Consumer Affairs has filed charges against Major World, a Northern Boulevard-based auto dealership, claiming that the company has been using deceptive and illegal practices to profit from consumers.

The DCA claims that the firm has a long-standing practice of luring unsuspecting consumers, particularly those with limited English proficiency, with promises of great deals on used cars and financing, regardless of credit history, income, or income-to-debt ratios.

The city agency is seeking more than $2 million in restitution and fines and the revocation of Major World’s three secondhand auto dealer licenses and the creation of a trust for the victims who were allegedly cheated.

The allegations will be heard in front of the city’s Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings at a date to be determined.

The charges deal with the firm’s practices at Major World Chevrolet (43-40 Northern Boulevard), Major World Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (50-30 Northern Boulevard), and Major Kia of Long Island City (44-11 Northern Boulevard).

The DCA claims that Major World’s illegal practices included submitting false information on consumers’ credit applications–such as the nature of their employment, income and monthly rent obligations–to falsely inflating car values.

Major World, the DCA claims, engaged in these practices to make car deals more attractive to financing companies, which would then issue loans to many consumers who were not qualified to receive them.

In the end, the DCA claims, many consumers were left with overpriced cars and were saddled with high-interest loans.

DCA’s investigation to date includes 30 consumers, a fraction of the number of people likely harmed by Major World, the DCA claims.

“Our city’s working families, who often struggle to make ends meet, rely on their cars to accomplish life’s most basic tasks like going to work or going to school,” said DCA Commissioner Lorelei Salas. “Buying that car is usually one of the largest purchases a family makes. It is outrageous that Major World, who claims to treat its customers like family, traps these hardworking New Yorkers into loans they can’t afford.”

The owners of Major World could not be reached for comment.

They should close the place down. My car was a lemon from the start. I paid my hard earned money for a car that had to be written off by insurance 6 months later. How discgraceful. I will never forget the horrible experience I had, and put my faith in the justice system. Thank you for this investigation.

Queens Auction House should be investigated also. As a matter of fact, 90% of pre-owned car dealers should be investigated. They are all cut out of the same cloth.

My brother and I brought two cars within two days at major world about 5 years ago. We didn’t realize untill later we actually got screwed over. I ended up investing another 7gs into the car because the transmission on a 2 year old car with almost 30 thousand miles had gone bad alongside a bunch of other things. The interest rate is extremely high and that was with good credit. And I am almost 100% positive that the guy who “helped” us pocketed our down payment. In the end, I ended up paying twice the amount my car was worth.

I just bought a Chrysler and I had told the associated that I was going to pay cash, and he took me to a room and he end up financing the car. The used car price was $18,500 and with finnance it end up with $31.600 I don’t understand why the department of Consumer affairs don’t take acción. They just fallow small business. Hope they close soo!! We need acción plz.

I don’t get it this is suppose to be a response page form the DOJ getting reviews about major world and some have manage to turn this into a fifth grade spitball fight. If you cannot give important information about good bad are impartial reviews stay the “f” off this blog. people are hurting behind these deceptive tactics and as far as credit scores go. Banks and financiers tell tell the reporting bureaus to go up one. Simply put it’s all who you know and if you don’t know anybody are look are speak different then you might get a bad deal. Try buying from a one owner until you are sure

I was ripped off by Major World selling a 2011 Chevvy Cruize car that had been declared a lemon in the carfax and they hid that. When we tried to make a trade in a car in the Jeep, it was not accepted until today that we continue to pay for this scrap. PLEASE TELL ME HOW I CAN DEMAND THESE SCAMMERS. Just Keeping It Real

All of you moaning, bitching, and complaining, GET YOUR MONEY UP AND YOUR CREDIT RIGHT PERHAPS PAY YOUR BILLS AND MAYBE YOU WONT HAVE TO BUY A USED CAR.
This “poor me” shit needs to stop. First of all, most of you walk into a dealership with fucked up credit, your consigner needs a fucking consigner, your bank statements don’t reflect on owning a $10,000 car.

Secondly, you idiots go into a used car dealer with a Crystal taste with a Malt Liquor budget. Get real! Then you folks don’t even know how to take care of a car in the first place, thinking oil changes and brake jobs are covered under warranty (hahahahaha) you don’t even ask the right questions about the maintenance of the car, then when your car gets fucked up its the DEALERS fault lol don’t even ask for service records before signing, dont even remember your salesmans name, finance managers name, don’t even know if you have GAP insurance (hahaha I can’t) but BLAME THE DEALER because you are uneducated consumers. I’ve worked in dealerships for my entire life and I just laugh at you idiots. How do you fill out a credit app with a dealership but don’t remember names? Don’t remember you signed for the shit to be ran, I mean come on. Y’all do it to yourselves. But boo-hoo!!!! The dealer conned me!

I had the same experience, the sales people distract you as you’re waiting for the carfax printout .They used a different cars report. This was confirmed to me by an ex-employee of Major World.
Twice i was ignorant enough to buy from them, the second time i had no choice. The car i bought from them cut out continously, with no warning, very scarey when it happened on the highway! They only agreed to take the car back when i had it towed to their service entrance and blocked the entrance .When i tried to trade in the replacement car,a Volvo ,which cost me $6000 ,2 years later, the new dealership ,valued you it at $500!!It had been in a serious crash with major damage which was not reported in my carfax!CROOKS!!!!

Those commercials, if you noticed , are all latins in them. From the guy on the stilts ,to the mechanic, to the customers in the cars. they targeted the latin community. They targeted people of any race that had little ,bad, or no credit, and no where else to go. The caddy dealership next to it pulls the same stunts, stay away. If you want a good dealer go to long island, try to use a brand name dealer to not some little side of the road guy, or a gimmick place like this. You may pay a little more, but at least you have peice of mind.

“El Pacha At Maaaajor World!” How much money the Major World people paid to Dominican TV host Frederick Martinez to play along as car seller host for their infomercials being shown on the Puerto Rican US based channel WAPA TV-America? Go figure! On the other hand, when you buy used cars, assume they sell the vehicles as it is. No guarantees whatsoever and you get what you paid for. But, to simply use the Latino community to play the game of “Buy a car cheap” and using some clowning tactics to sell out a car (Believe me! I see this in Florida all the time!), that is first red sign you have to avoid. I don’t know how the State of New York took so long to figure that out, but the moment I saw their clowning ads, I thought the same thing. AVOID IT!

This place has been getting away with their nonsense for years. I bought a new 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee there. I was financing through my credit union which they didn’t like. As I was signing the paperwork, the Russian Mgr. Tried to sneak a different contract in, which I threw on the floor. Then he trys an extended warranty on me. A real piece of dirt. I got yp to walk out and he grabbed my arm, I pinned hi.m against the wall.i got a different salesman, never paid for an oil change and was given a lot of perks

Same exact situation here. As soon as they saw I had an excellent credit score they wanted nothing to do with me because they couldn’t approve me for an extravagant interest rate (the salesman and manager who were helping me flat out told me that!) It’s a place meant for people (i.e. suckers) who don’t do any research with bad credit for high interest rates. They do the same things all the banks were doing up until the market collapse in 08. Its not illegal (sadly) but it’s not right. Their cars are also very poorly maintained and require lots of repairs. There are many easy ways to research cars nowadays so whoever doesn’t, it’s their own fault (Caveat Emptor). They definitely do prey on desperate people with poor credit, but that’s not illegal.

He is right, it’s 2017 and people are still complaining that they got ripped off because they paid some ridiculous fees? It’s time you take responsibility for being that dumb! Again what kind of gun did they put to your head when they forced you to sign?? How many mobsters did it take for you to call and finally find someone to co-sign for you?? That’s what I want to know!

Same way you do your reasearch on other things, do your research before going out to shop for a car!

Bottom line is this, we have all the answers at our fingertips with technology now a days. You can look up what restaurant or deli has good reviews when buying chopped cheese, but you won’t do the same when buying a car!

This type of practice has been happening with other used car dealers also. I think DOJ should also investigate Queens Auto Auction house on Atlantic Avenue, in Jamaica, Queens. I was there two weeks ago looking at an SUV, the sales guy added on $7500 worth of crap on the top of the advirstised vehicle price of $14,500, so the price of the vehicle climbed up to $21500. Then they wanted to charge me 24% finance rate to finance the car. As the sales guy was very detterent of cash price. It was basically hilarious and sad to see how these used car dealers are openly robbing people. I have past expireence in auto finance so I know how to negotiate these gimmicks, so finally I just walked out and told the sales guy to keep his vehicle for himself.

I have a friend who used to car jockey for major world. This has to be 12 years ago, he told me back then dont ever buy a car here. Some of them are wrecks, bent chassis, floods, and they pass them off as good vehicles. (No surprise, used car salesman jokes) he aslo told me they prey on poor credit people that have trouble getting approved, 25%,30%, financing. This place is bad news

I wish I would have investigated major world. Wouldn’t have gotten a car I hated from them. They don’t treat people like family, more like a sucker!

Also most of the sales people are like bad quality like ex cons or drug users. They look like thugs.

This place has all its vultures out front preying on any1 who arrives, not the employees fault they trying to earn a living based on employers despicable tactics, so only they get a pass. I live near them for 25 years I stop by all the time to look at vehicles and saw how the vehicle I wanted was on 43st so I went over on my own only to see a TOTALED CAR under repair to pass as legitimate. Pause brakes reverse never again. Sorry for those who were swindled. If you inflate the said persons credit evaluation it drives the APR UP based on false feeding financial institutions with higher rent payments etc. unbeknownst to Customer. All SMILES AND BETRAYAL walk by say hello and keep trucking MI GENTE MY PEOPLE.

Before you call people ignorant, you might learn how to spell and form correct sentences. Can it be legal in NY to charge 30%? Of course not. Can a dealer do it? Of course they can. They can add “bank fees”, “acquisition fees” and other charges on top of the financing.

youre missing something, the highgest percentage anyone can charge is 24.99 a dealership cant just pick whatever rate they want. if that wouldve been the case alot of dumb people would be in a lot more debt

Wrong the banks deal with dealerships when you enter without a guarantee loan of your own. That said, if Major Mistake changes your information to influence a bigger sale and include a Major Mistake Warranty that’s deception. Illegal immigrants or not, no 1 should be misled.FINAL. I fight for HONESTY Booya

People pay 25% which I think is the limit because no lender will pick up the deal. That is there faults. Don’t blame Dealership for your short comings.

The dealership falsifies the customers financial information on the applications it sends to the lenders. They are not doing this to help anyone, they do it to get the loan approved so they can take their $10,20,30 grand and move the inventory off their balance sheet. They also inflate the cost of the vehicles – which is bad for the customer, who is getting ripped off, and bad for the banks who get crappy pieces of collateral with far lesser value than the amount of money they lent out for it. The dealership is screwing with the whole process and taking advantage of both sides, to ensure maximum (illegal) gain for themselves. They most certainly deserve blame…and worse.

But... but...

…They had the Naked Cowboy and Curtis Sliwa of the Guardian Angels in their commercials! A dark day for the United States.

You’re absolutely wrong, as a former employee, knowing the ins and outs…it was a disgrace to be next to Major World and see the horrible things they did to customers. Cadillac never treated their customers even close to the same way….not to mention that our cars didn’t come from “totaled” lots where cars were deemed unsafe to drive

You are a nasty person Jenny. It is amusing though, that you are so quick to hop up on your soap box and berate others about not paying their bills, while simultaneously displaying your self-righteous, ignorant attitude towards others. We poor people don’t deserve cars, according to you, so on behalf of everyone that you have offended, we just want you to know that we marvel at your ability to pay all your bills on time. Good for you. Just one more little thing…I’m not surprised that such a prejudiced, insensitive post would come from someone like you, you are a disgusting bitch. By the way, you TRULY need to go back to school, or Russia, or wherever you can go to learn the english language before you decide to post ever again, as your grammar and spelling are atrocious…it’s basically impossible to read your post of stupidity, as you couldn’t spell if your life depended on it.
