Council Member Julie Won to Host Backpack Giveaway and Free WiFi Sign-Up Saturday

Aug. 26, 2022 By Czarinna Andres

Councilmember Julie Won is handing out school backpacks for kids Saturday as they get ready for their first day of class Sept. 8.

The council member is holding events throughout the 26th Council District in coming weeks with two scheduled for Aug. 27. Free backpacks and school supplies will be handed out at Ravenswood Houses, located at 35-35 21st St., from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow and at Queensbridge Houses, located at 10-25 41st Ave., from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Won plans to have additional backpack and school supply giveaways in early next month in Woodside, Sunnyside, and Astoria. The details of those events are still to come.

The councilmember, who ran for office last year on a platform of bridging the digital divide, will also be promoting free Wi-Fi at Ravenswood Saturday.

She plans to help residents sign up for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal program where eligible households get free Wi-Fi service or $30/month credited toward their bill.

Won hosted events helping people signup for the free Wi-Fi program at Queensbridge Houses and Woodside Houses earlier this summer.

Many people are eligible for the program–not just NYCHA residents. New Yorkers who earn below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines or are enrolled in Medicaid, SNAP, National School Lunch, and veterans’ pensions are also eligible.

The APC was funded through the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021, which included $65-billion earmarked specifically for broadband infrastructure.

All these giveaways (from both parties) have been funded by the US Taxpayer yet the politicians will be upfront while handing them out. So “generous” . Their “generosity” is coming from our taxes.

Ms. Won: Please get the bums off of Queens Blvd. 1- bum has seized control of the bench outside Starbucks and is trying sell bottles of water, cd’s and News papers. He has thrown bags of trash into the street twice that I know of 2- A guy has taken over the benches outside shakra on 44th street an QB. He needs psychiatric treatment and is a danger. Checkout the damage he did to the metal bench on 44th street and QB. There are about seven or eight other regulars including Change. Enough already. Fix it. Or are you waiting for someone to get hurt or worse. My 87 year old father needs those benches.

They have discounted plans for people below a certain income level

Ironically Spectrum offers lower rates if you’re below a certain income level, the same idea behind the initiative in this article.

I guess you want to do away with that too? ?

No it means discounted

Actually thousands of New Yorkers use the program. Internet access allows for economic mobility for things like applying for jobs. There’s a website called Google if you want to learn more!

You miss my sarcasm.

There are many people in this city who insist the world owes them everything just for existing.

Everyone else in the world has to pay for everything they have
Why not these people?

Republicans are known as the party that has done so much for people who don’t need any help

Just declare bankruptcy. Republicans are fine with that, just ask Donald Trump. People vote Democratic because they don’t believe in myths, fairytales, invisible gods and conspiracy theories.

So Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists etc are all Republicans? And transgender women are real women is a scientific fact? And CRT and systemic racism aren’t conspiracy theories on why some people don’t succeed in life? And 5 year olds who play dress up should be transitioned to the opposite sex isn’t a fairytale? And nothing says progressive then promising free everything and promoting entitlement. Is the dementia finally catching up to you?

The worst performing US States are exclusively Republican

Smh- Your post is filled with myths and fairytales. How many people do you know who have. “transitioned” ? Please explain the application of CRT to the rest of us. Things that affect almost nobody compared to things that effect tens of millions. That is the power of brainwashing. Incite the anankastic and they will propagandize for a cause without fully comprehending it and for free ( your favorite term).

Things that affect nobody? Then why do you and other liberals push the narrative of lgbtq? Why are there protests? And does the number of kids transitioning matter? But whatever number it is, it’s probably more than black deaths caused by the police.

And here is a brief overview of CRT. It’s a belief that there is racism that goes beyond individual prejudices that involves policies in regards to law, employment and education. And unfortunately this does affect millions because the left has used it to create divisiveness, creating an oppressor vs oppressed state spreading it to womens rights and gay rights and my favorite prisoner rights. The left is using this as tool to keep poor minorities into thinking they are all victims of racism, and women and trannies victims of sexism and transphobia. But why is it liberals don’t never hold individuals accountable. Read Thomas Sowell’s book; white liberals and black rednecks. The problem is people like you. Old white liberals who think they know how to fix everything. And your basic argument is… FoxNews, brainwashing, tucker Carlson… wah wah. Your own ego and self worth has warped your mind old timer. It’s time to unplug FoxNews and save what’s left of your senile brain.

SMH- The libs don’t support these issues for the volume or their size, they support them for inclusivity. You never answered the post you’re commenting to in regards to application of CRT. You just posted a broad text book over view. Big difference . Your handle seems to be one of the larger culprits of misinformation on this comment stream., You appear to struggle with issues of hostility, anger and internalization. If admin is sincere about creating a civil platform they should look to abridge or outright shutdown your access.

B-Capacity to make a fully informed decision and to consent for treatment;
C-Member must be at least 18 years of age;
D-If significant medical or mental health concerns are present, they must be reasonably well controlled. Please do some research on the topics you are commenting on. You’re using this site to deliberately misinform its users.

I’m getting cancelled. ?Lmao! Civil discourse by liberals? Same people who riot and attack anyone with opposing views. And crt is used to create victimization so all the people you fight for feel oppressed. And at least I have content in my posts. Please learn to read. But I guess a civil discussion in the eyes of a liberal are jokes and emojis. And this same moron has the attention span of a two year old and can’t even comprehend something that isn’t 3 sentences long and has no emojis. Another unstable snowflake. Keep spending mommy and daddy’s money while you spend your day drinking Starbucks and smoking weed.

SMH, Look up the projection. Wow

Smh

So without Buddha, would there be Buddhism? And why do certain sects of Buddhism worship Buddha and have statues of him? Nice try junior.

Worshiping statues is Idolatry

@smh-Most Buddhists do not believe in God. Although they respect and look up to the Buddha , they do not believe he was a god but they worship him as a form of respect. By doing this they show reverence and devotion to the Buddha and to bodhisattas .Please do a simple google search and fact check. You’re spreading misinformation

Buddhists believe Gautama Buddha was a human, not a god

Do you know what the “Buddha” part of “Buddhism” comes from? A human being, a teacher. So…not a god. Thanks for agreeing!

Trump literally handed out checks to wealthy Americans

Great point, the gov. should not give handouts.

How’d you return your stimulus check?

The CARES Act was signed into law by Trump....

Oh wow, you really didn’t know! Proposed by Mitch McConnell; you didn’t know this but he’s a Republican too!

Trump also signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act into law (another $900B on top of the original $500 billion).

I guess democrats get credit for the the largest economic stimulus package in U.S. history (10% of total U.S. gross domestic product) now? Well…ok.

City Council passes bill shifting broker fee burden to landlords, sparking backlash from real estate industry and key critics

Nov. 14, 2024 By Ethan Stark-Miller and QNS News Team

The New York City Council passed a landmark bill on Wednesday, aiming to relieve renters of paying hefty broker fees — a cost that will now fall on the party who hires the listing agent. Known as the FARE Act (Fairness in Apartment Rentals), the legislation passed with a veto-proof majority of 42-8, despite opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats.
