Two city council candidates who are vying for seats in western Queens are hosting a community conversation on hate crimes and race relations in Woodside Saturday.
The “raw conversation” will be co-hosted by Ebony Young, an African-American woman who is running to represent the 26th Council District that covers Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City. She will be joined by Yi (Andy) Chen, an immigrant from China, who is vying to represent District 25, which covers Jackson Heights and Elmhurst.
The conversation will be moderated by Lisa Helmi Johanson of the racial justice group Interfaith Justice Queens.
The event, called Queens Unite!, aims to bring the community together through open discussion. Key topics will include the loss of Black and Brown lives to racism, as well as the spike in hate crimes targeting the AAPI community.
The event is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Woodside Memorial Plaza, at the intersection of Roosevelt and Woodside Avenue in Woodside. It is expected to end by 2:30 p.m.
“There’s power in unity. If we can stop searching for the negative it leaves room for an open door to change,” Young said.
Meanwhile, Chen, a resident of Elmhurst, says the event is about building a sense of community.
“We are all in this together,” Chen said. “Today and everyday, we stand together and united we fight back.”
Local youth poets are also expected to speak. They too will address the racial climate.
The event is open to the public and community members are invited to speak and join the discussion.

“Key topics will include the loss of Black and Brown lives to racism, as well as the spike in hate crimes targeting the AAPI community.” LOL. Does the AAPI community realize that the animals doing the majority of these crimes comes from the racism of black and brown communities, if not their ghetto ignorance?
And will the black and brown communities address that the real problem lies within their communities? Ask any working black man or woman who they fear the most? Its their own people! Why do you think crime is the biggest issue right now in the city? Who is the biggest killer of black and brown people? Black and brown people.
The only hate out there is the hate for independent thinking.
EBONY HAS MY VOTE 100% ON PRIMARY DAY. ONLY PERSON WHO IS RUNNING THAT IS QUALIFIED AND LOOKS, ACT AND COMES ACROSS AS REAL COMPARED TO THE OTHER CANDIDATES. A PARENT, MARRIED, CHILDREN, LIVES IN WOODSIDE, MENTIONED HER PARENTS AND BEING UNION MEMBERS AND GAVE PROPS TO HER PARENTS. SHE’S ALSO THE ONE PERSON WHO HAS REALLY SERVED THIS COMMUNITY, HAS BEEN INVOLVED, NOT USING HER GENDER, RACE, AS A SPRING BOARD TO THIS OFFICE. SHE A WORKING WOMAN/MOTHER, A PARENT, A WIFE WHO CARES ABOUT HER COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD. I HOPE EVERYONE COMES OUT TO VOTE FOR HER.
Nobody listens when you shout.
Are these populist idiots ever going to deal with any other issues besides racism?
Its victim mentality. Plain and simple. They blame the ills of life on racism so they can feel better about themselves and form a false sense of “community.” They will never look at themselves on why they never became this, they don’t have that, why this person has this and they don’t… etc. Easier to blame something else than actually trying hard. But why do you think they want big government to create equality and equity. Not really fair for everyone else who worked hard and sacrificed to make a better life for them and their families. But the feelings of these “victims” is much more important than real fairness.
Discussion can be summed up as follows: white people – bad; people of color – good.
Thank you and good night.
