Congresswoman Maloney Receives Death Threats After Authoring Gun Bill

April 3, 2013 Staff Report

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, whose district includes Long Island City, Astoria and parts of Sunnyside, has received death threats following some recent gun legislation she sponsored.

The death threats were phoned into her New York office yesterday in response to news reports about a bill she authored requiring gun owners to have insurance. The calls, according to her office, were fielded by interns, who were shaken by the experience.

Maloney’s bill would require gun owners to carry liability insurance, just like car owners, to give innocent victims of gun violence some recourse if they are injured.

“Law enforcement has been notified and they are investigating the calls, and so no further comment from me on the details of the calls would be appropriate at this time,” Maloney said in a statement.

“I am proud of my work to help curb gun violence,” she said, adding that “I strongly support the comprehensive package of gun reforms proposed by the Obama Administration.”

We have many rights that are guaranteed by the Constitution- freedom to assemble, freedom to express ourselves, and so fo forth. all of these freedoms DO come with regulations: I can’t yell “fire” in a crowded theater, and a group of us can’t just form a mob and march down Greenpoint Avenue without a permit. Gun ownership, the one amendment that deals with weapons, machines that are designed to kill, is the one freedom that requires more regulations than the others. Why is there such a lack of common sense over this issue? If you think you need a gun to be safe, then you have some serious problems and no gun is going to help you.

Rikki, you are an uneducated jerk! As a military mom, I get the right to say that. And by the way: if Carolyn Baloney thinks he life is in danger, why isn’t this being handled quietly? The woman is a showoff and a show boat. Rikki, you a serious L O S E R.

PS. Despite my disagreement with this bill, let me say that I totally condemn the person who may have made these threats. There is no justification for that kind of behavior whatsoever.

The ONLY veterans that deserve a pass are those who were drafted against their will (vietnam)….those are our true heroes, not those who volunteered to get shot at in undeclared “wars”.

@Rikki

I disagree with you there. The average US military man or woman does their job with skill and integrity. They have my respect. It’s the miserable leadership that has put them in places and situations they should not be. They should be defending the country, not doing the dirty work of the special interests.

Well who cares the Idiots VOLUNTEERED to get shot at…..

The military was always the last desperate option for serious Losers.

How many innocent people has our military killed the last 10+ years or so? Dismissing it as merely “collateral damage” just aint cutting it any more. Nobody is going after their guns.

Exactly 86mets…..this is all racial in America today Ohbewanna has set the tone, Black people are not included in any gun control legislation

Do i hear any call for mandatory jail sentences and no bail for possessing an illegal gun and/or using it in a crime? Do I hear anyone demanding TSA body scanners at all public housing projects? Its our money dont want to be scanned for drugs or guns, well move and pay your own rent.

I want fairness and balance and dont forget Black people never go to gun shows.

@Andresito

Murder is illegal and it should be. (unless, of course, when you murder the unborn, then that’s fine and dandy and you can even get the taxpayer to pay for it.)

Owning a firearm is a constitutional right. This new law is designed to infringe further upon those rights exercised by law-abiding citizens. They know very well it won’t stop the real criminals. Big difference.

Perhaps the NYPD and any other law enforcement official who is given a gun should be required to purchase insurance. They’ve all done their share of shooting innocent people.

86Mets–

Well, murderers break our laws against murder. Maybe we should just repeal those laws, because, after all, the criminals won’t obey them!

We would have no laws at all if we used that logic. Obviously people will break the laws, that’s never been the question.

Does anyone really think that gangsters, drug dealers and other violent criminals are going to buy this insurance?

Bravo! Congresswoman Maloney, Thank you for sponsoring gun legislation that sounds like a great idea.

Here’s an example where tracking of telephone calls and use of other technology which some may consider to be a breach of privacy could be put to good use. Anyone making a threat against another person for voicing an opinion should be treated harshly, especially when it comes to elected officials.
