City Shuts Down Aviation High School as a Vaccination Site, Directs Residents Elsewhere

March 24, 2021 By Allie Griffin

New Yorkers who have vaccine appointments at Aviation High School in Long Island City must go to a different location to get the shot.

Appointments that had been scheduled for Aviation High School will instead take place at 5-17 46th Rd., the NYC Health Department announced earlier this week.

The city has switched the location of appointments scheduled for Thursday, March 25 onward since high schoolers have returned to class. Students at Aviation High School returned for in-person instruction on Monday.

The date and time of the appointments have largely remained the same, according to the health department.

City workers have notified New Yorkers of the location change by text, phone and email.

Staff members will be present at Aviation High School to redirect anyone who mistakenly shows up to receive the vaccine beginning tomorrow.

Other vaccination sites at Queens high schools – including August Martin High School and Hillcrest High School — will begin offering second dose appointments only as alternative sites are identified, the city health department said.

The department didn’t immediately provide updates on vaccine appointments at Martin Van Buren High School, in Queens Village, or John Adams High School, in Ozone Park.

A health department spokesperson also didn’t respond to a reporter’s question as to why the high school sites still show on the city’s online vaccine finder.

However, the department said it is working to expand capacity at other vaccine sites, where possible, to accommodate any increased demand due the modifications.

I got my second Moderna shot at Aviation HS on 3/12/2021 and was unable to get excelsior pass online, said could not find me in database, now will have to try 5-17 46 Road to clear this up.

It’s the worst switch over ever. I was lucky enough to alert my family a few days but I heard some people were coming in at the late evening appointments and there were no notices! The school should’ve waited until the last of second doses were given out. Spring break was this coming week for them anyways so the school is empty

Leave Early.

I went today. Appt was at 4:40, got there at 4:30, the line goes down the block, turns, past Rockaway Brewery and back up toward Vernon. Had to be 200 people.
The volunteers are super nice and patient. Thank You Volunteers.
Queens Forever.

cast a wider net

the long lines at aviation baffled me. There are alternate sites with more appointments that are far more efficient. I was in and out of york college in 25 minutes.

Thank Aviation reform

if the librals hadn’t passed aviation reform we wouldn’t be in this mess

Woodside A

The new site is much less convenient to reach and much further away from Sunnyside, Woodside etc. If they were going to use an empty industrial building like this one on 46th Rd. near the river, I wonder why they couldn’t get one closer to here and to subway, etc.

The city is nearing the completion of a study that seeks to examine alternative sites for a new ferry terminal at Hunter Points South Park, which will replace the existing station.

The NYC Economic Development Corp., which oversees the city’s ferry routes, said it is considering the feasibility of four new locations at Hunter Points South Park where a large docking barge would be built to accommodate ferry vessels.
