Cabán Raised $171K More Than Katz In Most Recent Finance Report

Melinda Katz and Tiffany Cabán.

July 17, 2019 Staff Report

Public defender Tiffany Cabán out-raised Queens Borough President Melinda Katz by more than $171,270 as their contentious Queens District Attorney primary race headed towards a recount, financial documents show.

According to Board of Elections financial reports, Cabán raised more than $207,400 in the most recent filing period from July 1 to 11, compared to the $36,160 that Katz raised.

This represents a significant reversal from the beginning of the campaign, when Katz pulled in more than $1,419,000 and Cabán had about $256,700.

The reports also show Cabán spent less than her opponent during the period—about $142,100. Katz spent $325,307, although that was mostly used for previous campaign consulting, as The City noted.

The BOE reports came out just after the start of a manual ballot recount that is expected to take roughly two weeks.

The recount operation was automatically triggered by Melinda Katz’s narrow 16-vote lead over Tiffany Cabán after affidavit and absentee ballots were counted on July 3. Until that point, Cabán had held a 1,199 vote lead over Katz.

Alongside the recount, Cabán and Katz will be meeting in court regarding the validity of 114 specific affidavit ballots that contain errors in the information filled out by the voter. Ultimately, a ruling will be issued on these 114 disputed ballots after the manual recount concludes, but only if the results are still close enough for them to have an impact.

The winner of the Democratic Primary is expected to face off against GOP nominee Daniel Kogan in November.

And why is this news? To show what? To make it look like Katz is the underdog here that Tif is ahead of her in funding? If anything Katz has the backing of the corrupt Queens Democratic machinery behind her. The Amazon job killers/traitors/phonies Tif Caban backers Jimmy Van Bramer, Mike Gianaris who will flip and rally around Melinda Katz as soon as she is declared the winner. Joe “puppet master” Crowley still pulling all the strings and pressuring the local party bosses to steal this election.

LIC Direct-When you say traitor, do you mean like someone who works with a hostile foreign government or enemy nation to undermine the democratic process of our democracy?

Yup. Crowley and his corrupt team forced out Lancman, promising him an appointment , and Crowley family member will get Katz’s job. This election was rigged – the “absentee” and affadavit voters should all be called to see if they really exist – or were they filled out by BOE workers – who are all beholden to puppetmaster Crowley?

Race was not rigged, no matter how many ways you’re trying to repeat that under another fake name. Now you’re stooping to a new low by suggesting the BOE workers may have filled out the absentee and affidavit ballots. And you offer NO proof of your wild, unfounded conspiracy theories.

As for Lancman, he told Politico: “Nobody offered me anything to get out of this race.” He said once the NYTimes endorsed Cabán, he realized he had no chance.

Queens BOE has history of rigging elections, Gardens Watcher (aka Crowley lackey!).

see this story for proof, and everyone in Queens politics knows Meeks, Mens etc, that his Katz election is being rigged, and obviously Lancman won’t say he was offered a corrupt deal by Bolz et al. and, as all know only reason Crowley ever won, was never due to talent, ability, only because Queens Machine fixed the elections so no one viable could even get on ballot, and embarrass him, as AOC did in debate he finally showed up for.

From The New York Times:

How a Political Machine Works: Candidates Running for 21 Seats, All Unaware

In Queens, Democratic bosses run candidates without their consent for a board that sets party policy, even as reformers get kicked off the ballot.

Katz won on her own merits. Read story in today’s NYTimes about THIS race.

Just wonderin y’all: Are you related to R. Barkin, the guy who lost the only race he ever entered?

Tiffany Caban’s decline to prosecute list. Is this really what we want for our community?

marijuana, theft of services, unlicensed massage parlors, airport taxi (1220B), unlicensed driving and other minor driving offenses, turnstile jumping, petit larceny/shoplifting for amounts under $250, trespassing, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest,“bump up” burglary in the third degree felonies (would charge them as petit larceny misdemeanors), possession of gravity knives, “bump up” felony gravity knife cases, loitering, drug possession, welfare fraud, prostitution.

Katz came into this race with $1.5M. And yet no one wants to talk about money running politics. I would like to see Katz raise and spend money on her actual constituency!

I’m rooting for Caban on this.

I don’t support dems I support progressives. I was thinking they should start their own party but they’re making headway pushing out the old establishment moderates. Caban for the win!! Thanks for supporting her.

You support neither. Use of “They” is a dead giveaway you didn’t and couldn’t vote in the primary.

Queens voters don’t need or appreciate outsiders telling us what to do or who to vote for. But so glad you’re glad, Gigi.

Who’s the real wolf in sheep’s clothing? Sounds like GOP trolls are trying their best to pit Democrats against each other. See you in November.

Katz attorneys need to make sure Caban loses, so she never investigates their years of election tampering.

From the Daily News:

Katz attorneys Sweeney, Reich and Bolz “volunteering” for Katz, basically to make sure no one else gets control of the DA’s office while statue of limitations still valid to go after them, and Crowley family.

Daily News

For 30 years, the same three men have effectively controlled one of the largest Democratic organizations in America – the Queens Democratic Party and Boards of Elections.

They are Gerard Sweeney, Michael Reich and Frank Bolz, the powerful attorneys who serve Rep. Joe Crowley, the chairman of the Queens County Democratic Party. Reich is the executive secretary of the party, a spokesperson and wrangler of district leaders. Bolz is the law chairman, entrusted with keeping county-approved candidates on the ballot and knocking their rivals off.

Sweeney wears no official hat within the party infrastructure. But Queens insiders say he is arguably its most important strategist, helping guide the party’s political machinations on the homefront as it jousts for influence in City Hall and Albany.

He is also the one who gets to be very rich.

As the appointed counsel to the Queens public administrator, a job he has held without interruption since 1992, the 63-year-old Sweeney raked in just over $2 million last year administering in Surrogate’s Court the estates of people who died without leaving wills. Over the past decade, his haul is even more stunning: $30 million since 2006, according to an analysis of court records.

It’s impossible to know how many millions Sweeney received in his first 14 years on the job because the state’s Office of Court Administration, which oversees Surrogate’s Court, says it doesn’t keep those figures.

The three men, with Crowley’s blessing, still determine what type of justice is served in Queens County. No Queens judge rises through the ranks without the party’s blessing and regular donations to its housekeeping account.

This whole situation pisses me off. You can tell they are trying to steal this. In the end I think Caban will win what is rightfully hers.

It was a really close primary and lots of votes to recount. Then we’ll know who rightfully won.

Yes Chris all 5% of the eligible Democratic Party vote. This election should be void due to lack of voter participation.
