Butcher Block’s Long-Awaited Queens Boulevard Entrance Now Open, Renovations Nearly Complete

The Butcher Block, Sunnyside’s Irish supermarket, has opened its new entrance on Queens Boulevard after nearly three years of stop-start construction.

The locale, located at 43-46 41st St, has a new entrance at 40-15 Queens Blvd, which opened yesterday to customers, according to co-owner Michael Roche.

The expansion, Roche said, which incorporates the space once occupied by Pure Spa & Salon, will nearly double the 3,500 square-foot space.

The construction, which began in July 2016, was expected to finish in November 2018. However, the project was delayed, Roche said, due to issues with the Department of Buildings that the landlord had to rectify.

The main 41st Street entrance area is closed off to the public as the original store space is being revamped. That section should be completed in about three weeks.

The expansion of the store comes with a new kitchen, a meat smoker, and a new deli department.

The Butcher Block will be able off a broader selection of hot food items, as well as more vegetables and groceries, Roche said.

The store is best known for offering quality Irish meals, such as shepherd’s pie, corned beef, blood sausage, chicken pot pies, house-cured bacon, spare ribs and sausage rolls.

Roche and his business partner Noel Gaynor initially opened the establishment in 1995 on the south side of Queens Boulevard (between 41 and 42 Streets) until a massive fire in 2003 destroyed the store along with a number of restaurants.

Gaynor and Roche were able to find the space they are in now just months after the fire.

The duo are excited to expand and be to able to accommodate a greater number of customers.

“We’re happy to be of service and are looking forward to greeting our new customers,” Roche said.

The current store hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Love the Butchers Block. I know they are famous for a great meat counter, and food available in Ireland and GB, but I don’t think it would hurt to offer a fish sandwich, seafood meal or a veggie dish daily vs only on Fridays as is the case now. BUT nothing will stop me from shopping there !!!!

They need to stop trying to make Italian dishes. They have zero flavor. Stick with the basics

That’s because it is wheelchair accessible, and would be illegal otherwise. When the remodel is finished the 41st street entrance will be open again.

Limited accessibility (for anybody) is common during renovations, and it’s only a few weeks. They’re also very nice people and I’m sure they’d be willing to give extra help to anyone who needs it during that short time.

Glad to hear a bigger store but you need some Fresh Cooked Veggies. Please do not over cook them. Everything else is very good.

I love the Butcher Block and shop there all the time. Their dinners are delicious and knowing they’ll be able to do even more is exciting for our neighborhood. Congratulations to all involved!

I went there the other day to pick up a rib steak but the meat section was pretty underwhelming. Maybe these renovations are to blame? Hopefully, things will get back to normal after this new section is up and running. These guys also had high-quality steaks, which are hard to find around here.

I think it has something to do with the entrance on 41st street being wheelchair accessible. But I agree, in the meantime until that entrance is opened again what are people supposed to do?

It’s so easy to give them a quick call and tell them you’re on your way over. Most likely they’ll bend over backward to accommodate you. Don’t make a mountain over a molehill.

Hopefully they’ll take over Burger King & the Mexican joint too. Those places are nothing but trouble.
Mike Roche should run to be our city councilman, we’ve been bamboozled by JVB too long.

Why is the Butcher Block exempt from having inspections and grades from the health department?..I for one would certainly feel more comfortable knowing that there were some standards in place!

FYI – Supermarkets are inspected by the NYS Department of Agriculture to the same standards as the DOH but they don’t give letter grades.

FYI…Never heard of the Dept of Agriculture shutting down a supermarket for vermin and filth

You got it Glenda, we all could show and embrace statistics like Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and the rest of the republican longtime strongholds. Last in education, healthcare coverage, wages, general health according to US census snd Forbes Magazine and highest crime rates according to FBI.

Homeless men charged in deadly 7 train subway brawl in Woodside: DA

Three homeless men were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday and variously charged with felony robbery, attempted gang assault, and assault for allegedly stealing the belongings of a 69-year-old homeless man who was asleep on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Woodside early Sunday morning.
