A New York City barbeque joint will open at the former Studio Square location in Astoria Sunday.
Pig Beach BBQ, a Brooklyn-based brisket and ribs eatery, will occupy a sprawling 28,000 square foot space at the venue, located at 35-33 36th St.
It will be the company’s first Queens location and its second in New York City following on from its flagship eatery in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
The owners plan to bring award-winning barbeque dishes to the venue including their brisket and ribs, and specialty ‘Pig Beach Burger,’ which recently won three awards at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival in Florida.
The venue will feature a 12,000 square foot outdoor garden area that can serve around 700 people.
The outdoor space will include a giant screen — 30 feet x 30 feet — that will play football games, soccer, baseball and other big sports events. The outdoor space — which will have dozens of picnic tables — will be open all year round depending on the weather, co-owner Shane McBride told the Queens Post last year when he started working on the space.
The establishment will also have a large indoor dining and bar area with about 120 seats. There will also be another indoor area with space for about 85 people, which can be used for private events, McBride added.
McBride, an Astoria resident, said that the establishment will have a laidback vibe where kids are also welcome.
“We won’t be a nightclub or play ear-splitting music; it will be a mix of classic rock, singer-songwriter and oldies played in the background,” McBride said.
McBride has been a chef in New York City for more than 20 years, serving as the head chef at Balthazar in Manhattan. His business partner in the venture, Matt Abdoo, was executive chef for high-end Italian restaurant Del Posto.
The new venue will have more than a dozen beers on tap along with a range of wine, cocktails, and froses.
Some of the company’s signature sandwiches are filled with pulled pork while its fried chicken sandwich has a barbeque mustard sauce that previously won “best sauce” at a world cooking competition in Memphis.
Their award-winning Pig Beach Burger comes with pickles, white American cheese and a secret sauce.
Other meat dishes include peach and honey-glazed ribs, briskets and a smoked pork shoulder which comes with hatch vinegar sauce. A Greek-style smoked lamb shoulder, as well as Cuban mojo ribs, are also on the menu to emphasize the culture of the neighborhood.
Pig Beach BBQ will also serve platters, chicken wings, hot dogs and sides like french fried, baked beans and mac n’ cheese.
The venue will be open from 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from noon on Saturdays and Sundays, according to the company’s website.
