Bakery to Open First Week of March

Feb. 9, 2012 Staff Report

The long-awaited bakery on Queens Blvd, at the former location of Sonali Cuisine, will open during the first week of March.

The bakery, to be called Pink Icing, will be located at 44-12 Queens Blvd. It will be owned by Juan Arache, a Sunnyside resident, who already owns the Sugar Room, a baking supply store, on the same block.

The bakery will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will offer cakes, pies, cookies, muffins and apply turnover. Arache said that there will also be a focus on coffee.

The bakery was originally going to open last August. However, there were delays due to the New York City Buildings Department, after that agency discovered that the previous commercial tenants had made some illegal additions.

The Sugar Room, best known for selling baking supplies and offering classes, will continue. Arache said he is in the middle of renovating it.

Arache has designed cakes for celebrities and dignitaries, including the President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez, Latin singer José José, and Mariah Carey. He has worked for pastry shops in New York, including the Cup Cake Café and the Little Pie Company.

My last comment got screwed up. It should have said

Juan did participate in the Taste of Sunnyside with a wonderful cupcake and a luscious apple tart. I can’t wait for Pink Icing to open. I also love the Sugar Room and go there for all my baking supplies. Before Christmas he had a lovely baking set for children, which I gave my then five-year-old granddaughter to use when we bake together.

Tapenade is owned by Maruf Alim, who owned Bliss Bistro and Basmati Table before they were both evicted from Skillman Avenue.

I’m not a baker but I actually love browsing the bakery supply store just for fun!

Wasn’t Pink Icing at Taste of Sunnyside? If I’m thinking of the same group, they were REALLY good!

Also does anyone know what that new restaurant Tempenade is? Or when it is opening? If I remember correctly it used to be the old Rose Restaurant.

I think it’s great and I look forward to it opening, but am I the only one who thinks the video is a little bit funny? He just seems like he is not sure about the details…The interviewer has to pull things out of him. ……funny video.
