July 5, 2009 Report
Posters are going up saying that Deirdre Feerick is the best Democrat candidate for the District 26 New York City council seat. This seat is being vacated by Eric Gioia who is seeking higher office as New York’s public advocate. Much has been written about her main rival, Jimmy Van Bramer.
Unfortunately, there has been little written on Feerick despite her strong history of government service and her strong backers. Therefore I thought I would provide some comment:
The Woodside Herald in December said that Feerick had the support of US Congressman Joseph Crowley, Assemblywoman Marge Markey, Assemblyman Mike Dendecker and councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley. Later, she received the endorsement of the Queens Democratic organization for the 26th District.
Feerick was raised in District 26, which includes Sunnyside/Woodside and LIC. The following factoids were taken from her website. (http://www.feerickforcouncil.us)
Deirdre’s professional career in government began in the Oversight and Investigations Unit at the New York City Council. In that capacity she evaluated the efficiency of city agencies and made them more accountable and responsive to the residents of New York.
She then served as Counsel to the Legislative Division of the NYC Council where she helped craft legislation to protect the most vulnerable among us, including domestic violence survivors and children. She also helped secure funding for important programs and services, meeting with key advocates and organizers to ensure their voices were heard at City Hall. Later, Deirdre became the Counsel and then Deputy Director of the Administrative Services Division of the NYC Council, where she serves New Yorkers to this day.

[…] This must have been a difficult call for Gioia. However, the Queens Democratic machine has endorsed Feerick- so it makes sense that he would too. I hope he has made the right choice. (see earlier post: http://sunnysidepost.com/?p=935 ) […]
