The 2,000 sqf retail space, once the home of Nelsons Christmas Shoppe (spelling is correct), has been rented to two businessmen who are in the midst of establishing a gourmet/farmers market/grocery.
The new business, which will be located at 42-24 Greenpoint Ave site, is expected to be open in June. Further details are going to be unveiled shortly.
In other news, Bank of America is expected to open April 26, 2010.

TOO BAD I CAUGHT THEM DUMPING RAW SEWAGE FROM THE BACK OF THE STORE ONTO THE STREET TODAY. IT SMELLED UP THE WHOLE BLOCK. SO MUCH FOR “GOURMET!” GROSS!!!!!

I’bve seen no activitity here as of 5/1/10. If the new business intends to be open by June, they’d better get a move on! Am I wrong in believing that new building projects in Sunnyside take longer than anywhere else in Queens? A new pizza/gyro eatery on SE corner of 40th Street and QB has been under construction for at least six months, with no opening date announced. And work is just beginning after about five years of promises by Key Food that the plot between QB and Greenpoint Avenue on east side of 46th Street would be modernized. A new building is going up that will be four stories high, with the supermarket on the ground floor, and offices and rental apartments above, according to the maket’s manager.
Most of these premises were originally an art-moderne cinema called Century’s 43rd Street. It’s a pity that it couldn’t be operated as a theatre again. It would make a perfect home for the Thalia Spanish Theatre, which currently uses converted retail space on Greenpoint Avenue adjacent to Foodtown.
I’m really looking forward to seeing what type of “gourmet shop” opens up in that spot 🙂
