Woodside Avenue and 57th Street (Google Maps)

An 83-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by an SUV in Woodside this afternoon.
The elderly woman was hit at around 2:30 p.m. while she walking westbound on Woodside Avenue and tried to cross 57th Street, police said.
The victim was struck by a 2006 Toyota Highlander that was traveling westbound on Woodside Avenue when it made a right turn on 57th Street. The driver remained on the scene.
EMS responded and pronounced the woman dead on the scene. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.

My granddaughter is a 4th grade student there, as was I and my mother. Those poor students saw that poor women there, covered only by a blanket. Nothing was ever said to the children about this the following day. Shameful,,just shameful. She has cried to us about it several times.

I too have a child at the school and think the school staff did a good job of preventing any children from looking at this terrible tragedy. They tried to force everyone to go in the opposite direction. If you needed to go that direction you could have simply walked to Roosevelt Ave. to avoid it.
All the parents knew about the accident prior to pick up and there were dozens of NYPD and FDNY . Like most, my child didn’t see anything, so why should the school bring the subject up the next day?
How fast can we pay a JVB relative to be on the board at St Sebastian’s. We will have stop sign on Woodside ave all the way to Corona by next week.
So far, all we know is that this was an accident. The driver remained at the scene. I do not think the driver was “out to kill” someone. There are two schools and St Sebastian’s Center off Woodside Ave. WHY AREN’T THERE SIGNAL LIGHTS all along Woodside Avenue? Ask the crossing guards, who work, with stop signs, near PS 11 how cars, bikers, walkers pay attention to their instructions. As a walker, driver and one time biker, I think we as a community should work together to find a solution and prevent this from happening again.

Both drivers and pedestrians need be very careful and attentive at all times. We just have to deal with cars and buses and bikes and people being hurt or even killed. the blaming game does not help make things better.
It is just the nature of the beast, as bad as this sounds.
I suppose proper signage and traffic light help but that is about it.

I agree. Further crowding the neighborhood with the high story buildings planned will just increase this. You can’t launch a plan to increase density and Vision Zero at the same time except if the second is to defect blame properly put on you onto drivers. America invented the car for heaven’s sake. That invention drove government infrastructure for the first eight decades of the last century. They can mourn its ill effects like a Greek chorus, but it is big business and government that built our transportation infrastructure, not the people just trying to make a living inside the system.
But bike lanes & safe road design is the problem.
Look at all that car space.

And meanwhile the NYPD is pouring resources into cracking down on e-bikes, which have killed NO ONE. This city needs to get its head out of its rear.
They’re enforcing the laws against e-bikes in response to many complaints from NYC residents. They’re not “pouring resources” into a crackdown; clam down.
But at the expense of enforcing motor vehicles. It’s misguided.
When you put parking spaces above street safety, these kinds of tragedies are inevitable. When will people wake up?
I m still shocked. I was literally there and just passed 57 st and going to 56 and parked my car around 2:24 pm. I got 2 texts, replied, grabbed my bag and jacket, walked back to where I was going, between 57-58 Woodside Ave, and there was all emergency vehicles. When I was passing 57 st, there was none. It was a matter of 5 minuets from the time I passed 57 st to 56, parked, and did a few things and walked back down to do my own agenda. A life was lost in a blink. I don’t know if it was a car behind me, or it happened already when I was passing by. But I know no emergency vehicles when I was passing by, and cars were moving although abit of traffic due to school dismissal time as usual. But not as obvious as something just had happened. So I m still shocked, in a matter of a blink, a split second, a life was lost. RIP to the elderly lady. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family. 2:30 is the time Florida school had tragic event. I m praying.

Really. Wow. You are something. But do we really need your play by play of you parking, then I got 2 text, then I answered the 2 text, then I get my jacket, then I started walking . …….please ,its not your story.
That stretch of Woodside has always been a problem. I live a block up from there, you have the church on one side the park on the other, a school up the hill, and you have people turning off Roosevelt where they’ve probably been stuck in traffic then zooming up woodside on their way to Northern.
Cars fly down Woodside Ave. They put speed bumps between 56th and 55th and 55th and 54th, but they need them before 56th st as well. Or a traffic light.
I live on that block of 57th. There is a speed bump right on Woodside Ave in front of the school, which the driver would have crossed prior to making the turn. A stop sign would probably have helped. But that being said the school or church or anyone else in the neighborhood could have pushed for a stop sign at any point in the past.

Note no crosswalks across Woodside Ave
There are, but no stop signs and cars don’t stop, regardless. I’m a runner and even at the stop signs, I’ve almost been hit because cars don’t stop where they are supposed to. And all I get is a wave. A wave isn’t going to get me back from the grave when they hit me.
I wasn’t there, but can easily see it was someone not paying attention. Or not fully stopping at the line BEFORE the crosswalk.
I’ve noticed walkers, runners and bikers all breaking norms and rules of traffic interactment. When others don’t obey rules of the road and a crash occurs it always seems to be the driver’s fault.
That is sad news. Far too many pedestrians being struck by careless drivers recently.

Have you ever ridden in one? Did your parents walk you home from the hospital when you were born or take the subway? Would you prefer goods to be brought to you by horse or donkey? Would you prefer only young, healthy people with strong legs be able to travel farther than ten or so blocks? Did you know it can take an hour and a half to get from one town on Long Island to the next by bus but only 20 minutes by car? Did you know women are sexually assaulted on public transportation all over the world all day every day but rarely are assaulted in private transport? The incidence of people being injured or killed by motor driven vehicles rises when population density increases. Cars need to travel slowly, That is true. But to “hate cars” is to oversimplify the matter. Consider the big picture.
I hate fools like you who get pedantic when someone posts a pithy and concise comment after this sort of tragedy. Everyone knows what Optics meant but you had to channel energy into a dull & pointless comment

Ugh. Facts are such unwieldy things aren’t they? How nice it would be to dispense with them ( it’s a trend, right?) act slick and cook up sound bites to elicit applause from the peanut gallery! Kids can do it. Grown ups, not so much.
My hatred of cars is precisely why I don’t live on Long Island. Peace.
Well, there you go. All my family lives on Long Island, my doctors are there. All the people I grew up with in this neighborhood are there, and upstate. So, I drive. Don’t worry, people like me will die out in time, but you’ll have to put up with a bunch of us for th next 20 years or so. By that time a new generation will be snapping at your heels telling you what’s practically criminal about the way you live. Peace.
