March 30, 2017 Staff Report
A Filipino restaurant in Woodside was temporarily shut down for several health code violations earlier this week.
Ihawan, a Filipino restaurant at 40-06 70th Street, was shut down on Tuesday for racking up 56 violation points during a standard health inspection.
According to the Department of Health website, there were several critical and non-critical violations that led to the closure of the restaurant.
The critical violations included storing hot food below the required temperature and cold food above the required temperature, presence of live mice in the facility, and preparing food in a contaminated area.
Other violations included not having a vermin-proof facility and having some improperly installed plumbing.
The Health Department gives out violation points based on the size and scale of each violation. Letter grades are then assigned to restaurants based on the points system. Any restaurant that receives between zero and 13 points receives an A grade, any receiving between 14 and 27 points gets a B grade, and any with 28 or more points gets a C grade.
If certain violations are considered especially problematic, the Health Department can shut down the restaurant. Once a restaurant is shut down by the Health Department, it will be re-inspected once per month until it scores below 28 points, or the Department will close it for serious and persistent violations.

You dont belong to this block ose because your stomach is big no need to eat! Hahahaha!
I cant believe this block was livable at one time, now its 3rd world country, disgusting block.
If you are interested in Filipino food or would like a recommendation, Tito Rad’s on Queens Blvd/Sunnyside is actually pretty good. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. They expanded their facility and it’s clean. On top, they are rated A by the health department. NO VERMIN!
I’ve worked in various restaurants as an Assistant Chef including hotels & fancy dining places. Believe me, they have have some sort of infestation (vermin, cockroaches, ants, unidentifiable objects, etc..)
However, as the adage goes: “Some are worst than others.”
So about 4 employees and owner on thread trying to defend a shut down? 56 points when 28 is needed, that’s twice as much, scary
They were feeding crocodiles with bugs and rats in their basement.
These people who ID themselves as anonymous spewing verom against fellow pinoys who works hard are just jealous at the success of Iwahan. Get a life, iwanan ang inggit sa Pinas.
INGGIT?
56 violations of which 28 are serious ones are nothing to sneeze at. This got nothing to do with “inggit” or being envious of their poor record.
U must be related to the owners.
Go go go Phil resto … forget that neg comments
Shut up! You can’t afford the food that’s why! You only eat turo turo!
Mice meat plus bugs seasoning gives the best taste of BB que.
Let’s encourage cleanliness instead of destroying each other, they are our co filupinos n in one way or another we had enjoyed their food, maybe we still have d chance to try even better…
yes pleaae i agree. let us not try to damage the pinoy cuisine after all it’s us our culture get shame on, and if we have nothing nice to say just shut our mouth ey
Now you are sad again because ihawan is back to normal!
Jem, why so mad and bitter? Are you the owner of the Ihawan restaurant? I noticed that you replied to anyone who had the bad experienced and against Ihawan. I’ve been there multiple times and their food is just average. You should respect everyone’s opinion. You might have a different experience from them. But the fact that the restaurant got a temporary shut down due several violations is really a serious one. The “to go” area on the first floor is not appealing at all. It looks really dirty.
So so so happy, my family and I got food poisoning from this place back in September
Bugs, mice, expired food! I eat them all! I’m a resilient, strong, tough, irrepressible Filipino who can survive anything!
Been there yesterday and I would say their BBQ is the best!
I’ve been a costumer of Ihawan for many years, the food is delicious and this is the only place where I can bring my friends for a good Filipino food, people are friendly and the place is clean.
It is sad that some people will believe anything that they read without even checking Ihawan restaurant. I’ve been eating there for many many years and I can attest that those postings I read are without basis. Come on, ihawan has been in existence for the past 23 years. Surely, Dept. Of Health is not dumb to allow iHawan to operate if it’s up to the standard.
Lol perhaps that’s why they closed it
That’s because you don’t see what goes on in the back, in the kitchen, in the prep room, etc. Don’t be blind or a hypocrite.
It reopened and had 0 violations after 2 hours,Impressive
That is disgusting at first place it is Food business and the owner is responsible to keep the place well cleaned.
Who cares
Thank goodness I don’t go there to eat
I would suggest all filipino restaurants around that neighborhood be check by the Dept. of Health for the reason that breads doesn’t have expiration dates,..
Check your ass maybe it’s expired lol
foods on that ihawan filipino restaurant are full of sodium gloconate, I complain to the owner, but it fell on deaf ears, i even so some blackflies flying around those un cooked food on display, so disgusting,,,
Oh Peggi, whats eating you really, I’ve been eating at Ihawan for many many years and I have not seen uncooked food on display.
Must have gone to the wrong restaurant. ? Maybe in the market where there are uncooked food.
I think Peggi, you have not been at Ihawan, Otherwise you could have notice that they dont display uncooked foods in the restaurant. I know, ive been eating at Ihawan for many many years. The best pinoy food in town.
Shut up peggi ,you don’t even have money to open a restaurant!
I would never go back there and eat…..
That’ okay it ‘s ur loss anyway . You are just one of the few.
Please don’t! Lol!
oooh, that’s why i don’t eat Philipine food. And the fact that it sucks also.

And you’re still alive? surely if what you said is true those mice and bugs have already eaten you.
I know who you are OSE! With a big stomach and ugly face like an alien! I wanna fuck your ass
Does anyone have a list of Filipino restaurants that have not been shuttered by Health Dept at least once?
You can actually check the dept of health website and look up restaurants and their ratings
Renee’s
No kidding – In Renee’s, I once had a small roach fall down on my halo halo from the ceiling! When I pointed it out to one of the staff, they blamed it on the tenant upstairs.
Racist comment!!!
