Several local Radio Shack stores are closing, including Sunnyside location

March 21, 2017 By Hannah Wulkan

Several local Radio Shack stores are shutting down following the company filing for bankruptcy last month.

As part of a court filing in Delaware, the electronics store released a list of 365 branches it plans to shut down by the end of the month, including one at 22-32 31st Street in Astoria.

Though no other local stores were on that particular list, the branch at 28-54 Steinway Street and the branch at 45-02 Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside have banners outside announcing their closing.

According to the Radio Shack website, the Sprint store at the location on 31st Street will remain open, despite the Radio Shack portion closing down. The store is currently having a clearance sale to prepare for closing.

It is not yet clear what will happen with the other local branches closing down. Neither the Steinway branch or the Sunnyside branch have Sprint stores.

This is the second time in two years that Radio Shack has filed for bankruptcy. According to the most recent filing, just over 550 stores will be shut down by the end of the month, while the company evaluates what to do with the approximately 1,000 remaining stores.

“Since emerging from bankruptcy two years ago as a privately owned company, our team has made progress in stabilizing operations and achieving profitability in the retail business, while our partner Sprint managed the mobility business,” explained a press release the company issued earlier this month.

“However, for a number of reasons, most notably the surprisingly poor performance of mobility sales, especially over recent months, we have concluded that the Chapter 11 process represents the best path forward for the Company,” it continued.

the electric/circuit parts that they used to sell, which they dont anymore, cost 100x more than buying it on ebay. i guess they never figured that part out.

but before Ebay they were the GO TO store for all your needs………plus you could order stuff and it would be in their stores sometimes the next day.

But it was the mix of items that made us not shop there anymore…..all they started to stock was the high end gold plated cords connectors and parts so i usually shopped at the 99 cent store to get what i needed in NYC.

Because they probably havent paid a bill in 6 months. People, especially landlords, have a misconception that if i rent to a big corporation im guaranteed to get paid. Good luck with that. Big business is small business with a few more zeros at the end

And while we’re at it, can someone explain to me how the GNC on Queens Blvd at 46th St stays open? They have like four bottles of vitamins in the whole store.

Nothing against this store; I’ve been in there a few ties and always left satisfied but it’s definitely part of the past and it’s hard to see how it is still necessary in today’s world of shopping. The retail world has changed so dramatically over the past few decades; unless you are truly performing a service and not just selling hard goods, you are a relic of the past and will not survive.

no one ever listens to me i was a RS customer for probably 20 years but they told us to go away, what would have saved RS was to designate one store in each area for parts.

I needed a simple usb to usb extension, all they had was the $15 gold plated ones the $3.99 ones you had to buy on line

Yup – that was my problem with the store – it never carried any actual useful parts. Almost to an item (except maybe batteries), they’d say they didn’t carry it but to visit their website.

But if I was ever in the market for a glitter-covered phone case, I’d know where to go!

Homeless men charged in deadly 7 train subway brawl in Woodside: DA

Three homeless men were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday and variously charged with felony robbery, attempted gang assault, and assault for allegedly stealing the belongings of a 69-year-old homeless man who was asleep on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Woodside early Sunday morning.

The victim woke up and tried to regain his property. During the ensuing brawl, the victim fatally stabbed a 37-year-old assailant and slashed a second man.
