Man slams woman against the wall in Sunnyside apartment building, police say

Suspect (NYPD)

March 21, 2017 Staff Report

Police are searching for a man who followed a woman into her Sunnyside apartment building and slammed her against the wall a little over a week ago.

The suspect allegedly followed the 28-year-old victim in to her apartment building near 43rd Avenue and 42nd Street around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday March 12, according to police.

Inside, he pushed her against the wall and put his hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming. The woman fought him off. The suspect then fled the location and was last seen walking south on 42nd Street.

There were no reported injuries or theft of any kind.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, about 5-foot-five with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue pants and black shoes.

Police have released a photo and video of the suspect and anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

After reading some of these comments, I’m not surprised that so many websites are doing away with this feature. I like reading reader’s contributions but they so often go off the deep end or are written so poorly that the message gets overshadowed by the messenger’s inability to communicate effectively.

Then again, what happened to this woman is disturbing; how it gets reduced to “a man slams her against a wall” is puzzling. He invaded her home and physically attacked her.

Don’t understand how you can blame the victim. With the turnover in these apt buildings it’s very hard to know who lives there and who doesn’t. You can’t slam the door in everyone’s face all the time either ..of course we all have to try to be alert and know our surroundings, but until it happens to you, then you have no clue how fast these things can happen and someone can sneak up on you. Have a little sympathy for the victim here..what did she do wrong??? Come home???

Christine- you come on. NOBODY IS BLAMING THE VICTIM. Play the video again. This woman never looks up back or around. Did she even hear this guy hit through the first door to catch the second door into the building lobby she never closed. That’s why many buildings post signs stating make sure the door closes behind you. This woman was a prime target, oblivious. If she doesn’t know her mistakes she will be a target again. Do you not believe this perp didn’t size her up as a sitting duck? He saw she was in her own wiorld. Grow up Christine, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Anonymous- it almost has happened to me but I am not afraid to ask someone where they are going and I always make sure the door closes behind me and I just don’t just let strangers into the building even when they knock on glass while I’m getting the mail. Some of us believe in preventing issues when we can and controlling what we can unlike people like you who cry and do nothing and honestly believe others should do nothing in safe guarding their own safety.

@Christine Are you for real? Nobody is “blaming the victim” here. This is a terrible thing to happen to someone, this woman was assaulted by a creep who intended even more. Just because someone points out someones mistakes in a situation like this one does not mean they are “blaming the victim”. In your zest to be the compassionate one on this comment stream,, you miss the realty of this persons mistakes, or some may say “negligence” putting others in the building at risk. By not closing the door behind her this perp could have gone to an unlocked apartment or up to hide by the roof and push his way into an unsuspecting persons apartment. It happens more than you think.

Hello

There’s also a video on NY1 that showed he was in Met Food on 44th street right before this. He grabbed a woman under her coat while she was shopping. Sick perv!

It appears the heels gave her leverage. Good for her. Hopefully this guy is caught real soon.

More self defense classes should be offered by the local gov to equip all women to fight back just like this courageous woman did.

If this was Saudi Arabia, SHE would get in trouble and he would probably walk free. The Saudis are the biggest threat to US safety but they have oil so that’s the only reason USA is their friend.

That will teach her to take a look behind her next time to see who she is holding the door for and letting in the building.

Anonymous,- You’re the creep who doesn’t empower people not to be a victim. Thank you long timer for some sound advice on not to becoming a victim. If more people just paid attention there would be a lot less “victimization” going on and a lot less victims. The person posting under anonymous would tell you differently and try and convince you there is nothing a person could do from being a victim or a target.

Yasss- Whatt if what if I?!?! The police give out pointers on how not to become a rape victim, are they “blaming the victim”? Interesting point about this woman being raped. She would have been the one who let her own rapist into the building. How do you think she would have felt with that revelation? What if this guy didn’t go for her but instead hid by the roof and waited for a woman or child to open an apartment door and pushed them inside and shut the door?

Johnny

@anonymous- You’re way off base. The perp is looking for opportunity. If the woman closed the door he would have been denied the opportunity. The only bad thing is the perp moves on until he finds an opportunity. This guy must be caught somebody knows him there is a good clear image of him. When I was growing up in Sunnyside, in a building very similar to this one people were not afraid to ask people where they were going, today people are afraid to engage others and stay in their own little worlds.
