The silver screens at Kaufman Studios and the Museum of Moving Image will feature work by Sunnyside / Woodside residents and other Queens filmmakers as part of the 7th Annual Queens World Film Festival beginning this Wednesday, March 15th.

The opening night, originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 14th, has been cancelled due to the pending snowstorm expected to hit the city.  Those with tickets to opening night can have their admission honored at one of three other screenings during the week; Daughters of the Dust, Scumbag and Queens Corner.

The Queens World Film Festival will start screening more than 100 films at the two venues from Wednesday to Sunday, March 19th. Although there will be a block of screenings on Sunday, March 19th at 4:30pm featuring works of different Queens filmmakers at the Museum of Moving Image, the following films also include work by Sunnyside and Woodside residents, and will be spread throughout the course of the festival.

The Suitor
Tuesday, March 14th, 7:00pm @ Redstone Theater, Museum of Moving Image

The year is 1938, and Orson Welle’s live “War of the World” broadcast plays as the motivating factor for a lonely man to pursue a panicked and frightened woman in “The Suitor.”

Woodside resident Alvaro Congosto directs the 11 minute short about a new take on what happened the night the world all but seemed to be ending.

Cake
Saturday, March 18th, 5:30pm @ Redstone Theater, Museum of Moving Image

Sunnyside resident Anne Hu will make the world premiere of her short, “Cake” at this year’s Queens World Film Festival.

The film takes place in the near future, where a married couple orders a sex robot in hopes for them to explore their sexuality.

Hu is the writer-director, editor and an actor in the 11 minute short.

The Seven Men of Hanukkah
Saturday, March 18th, 3:15pm @ Zukor Theater, Kaufman Studios

Although Sunnyside actor Mike Houston is used to auditions, landing roles in television shows like “Orange is the New Black,” and “Sneaky Pete,” his character in the 16 minute short, “The Seven Men of Hanukkah,” becomes subject to a very unusual audition following a recent loss.

The romantic comedy is not necessarily about the Jewish holiday or seven men in particular, says writer-producer Sharon Cooper, but she assures festival goers that the title will make sense after they finish viewing the short.
