Dogs paraded through Woodside in style this past weekend, celebrating Halloween with costumes ranging from the political to the adorable.

More than 100 people and their dogs came out to the fifth annual “Woofside Pet Parade” hosted by Woodside on the Move on Saturday, marching from Skillman Pets to Windmuller Park. Following the parade, about 20 dogs and owners participated in a costume contest in the park.

The costumes were judged in five categories, explained Executive Director of Woodside on the Move Amy Paul, including Best in Show, Most Queens Pride, Most Original/Homemade costume, Best Pair (owner-dog matching), and Best Trick.

A panel of three community members judged each category, including Kenny Madrano from Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer’s office, Regina Shanley of Community Board 2, and a volunteer audience member. Shanley’s dog won Best in Show in 2013, Paul said.

The winner of the Best in Show award was a white poodle carrying Hillary Clinton on a pedestal. The owner modified a hotdog costume in to the pedestal, and added a Clinton doll and political paraphernalia.

The winner of the Most Queens Pride award came from a Woodside-Sunnyside runners member, who dressed her dog in a running outfit and race bib. The award for Best Owner-Dog Pair went to a family and its dog dressed as panda bears carrying bamboo.

Other costumes included SuperDog, the pope, and flamenco dancers, Paul said.

It was great fun. The dogs had a ball, the people were smiling and laughing, it was an occasion to be lighthearted.

A dog story without Rick Duro and his dog people not being mentioned. Shocker! Actually, that last dog looks like a dog Rick would own!
