Sunnyside businesses are being haunted with the Halloween spirit.
Sunnyside Shines, the local Business Improvement District, is hosting a Halloween scavenger hunt throughout the neighborhood, encouraging residents to search for monsters in local stores.
Twenty-eight stores have hidden monsters inside, and every time someone photographs a monster and posts it to Instagram and tags @SunnysideShines and uses the hashtag #SunnysideHunt, they will be entered to win an Apple Watch.
“Everything we do is about promoting local stores, and shopping local, and we wanted to do something fun for the holiday,” said Sunnyside Shines Executive Director Rachel Thieme.
“We thought that this could get people to go in to businesses that maybe they haven’t gone in to before.”
Though the contest has only just begun, Thieme said that people have already begun posting the monsters to Instagram, with some sharing their discovery of new stores thanks to the contest.
Thieme added that some businesses are also offering a discount if people find and post the monster in their store.
The contest began on Monday and will run through October 30, with the winner of the Apple Watch announced on October 31.
The 28 participating locations are located within the Sunnyside BID on Queens Boulevard and Greenpoint Avenue.
“We’re excited about this and we hope that it’s a fun way for people to take another look at the stores in the neighborhood,” Thieme said.
