Aug. 31, 2016 Staff Report
The second annual Sunnyside Post Mile is set to take place around the streets of Sunnyside in 10 days time and many of the local bars and restaurants are encouraging residents to register.
Several bars and restaurants will be providing discounted beer on the day of the September 10 run/walk for participants.
The bars will be offering $4 Blue Point Oktoberfest beer throughout the day/night to all participants who show a race bib or T-Shirt from the event. Non-participants will be able to cash in on the discounted beer by paying $5 at any of the bars for a wrist band, with that money going toward the event’s charities (see below).
The establishments that have confirmed their participation in the deal include: Claret, Dog & Duck, Bar 43, Quaint, Globe, Alcove, Aubergine and the Copper Kettle.
“Last year, we had more than 500 participants in our inaugural event,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Sunnyside Post. “We expect a strong turnout again this year and we thank the bars for getting on board.”
The event is being organized by the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners in conjunction with the Sunnyside Post.
The event will start by Lou Lodati Park on 43rd Street.
Participants will then turn onto Barnett Avenue through to 50th Street before finishing at Skillman Ave (44th Street). The roads will be closed for the event.
Participants are permitted to run/walk with strollers and dogs are welcome as long as they are on leash and are at the back of the event.
“I think that this is a great way to bring the community together,” said Ann Sansaricq, an organizer of Woodside-Sunnyside Runners. “It’s a local event that will help raise money to beautify the neighborhood while promoting fitness.”
The run/walk starts at 10:00 am, with an opening ceremony kicking off at 9:30 am.
This year, there will also be children’s dashes along Skillman Avenue. They will begin at 10:45 am.
There will be medals presented to the fastest three runners in both the men’s and women’s categories. There will also be awards for children.
The run-walk will cost $20 for adults and $15 for children, with the proceeds to be split among five charities (see below). Participants will receive a Race-day T-shirt and will be eligible for discounts.

The charities are:
Sunnyside Artists, which plans to use its portion of the funds to paint a neighborhood mural
Woodside on the Move, which plans to use funds for neighborhood revitalization
The Skillman Project, which plans to bring elaborate decorations to Skillman Avenue during the winter holiday period
Sunnyside Shines, which will use funds for a beautification project south of Queens Boulevard
SUDS (Sunnyside United Dog Society), which will use funds for the upkeep of the Lou Lodati Dog Run and rescue programs

Really need to move this race to October when the weather is COOLER! Not like a sunny humid 90° day that we’re having this year, sheesh!
Sunnyside shines gets some of the proceeds to beautify the southside of queens blvd. It might be worth contributing just for that reason. But then again maybe not because whoever lives on the south side will just mess it up again anyway. South side sucks bad
Im not running nowhere to save a dollar on beer. Then when i go to the bar its gonna be all sweaty smelly joggers. PHEW!!! WHAT A STINK! WHY DONT THEY JUST RUN THE BIKE LANE ON Q.B., ITS NEVER USED ANYWAY
Good stuff, getting people active in neighborhood. Everyone is a winner from this: runners, joggers, donators. I hope everyone has fun
discount on beer, so now its $4 instead of 5? would it kill you just to give them a beer. What does it actually cost you? $1?
Where’s my pocketbook? I’m going.
@Optics “oh, jeez” such a nitwit loser comment. murals always better than blank walls which are often magnets for graffiti artists #celebratemurals

This is a great event but oh, jeez, please — not another mural! They’re so tacky.
