Nearly 1,000 attendees—mostly local residents– turned out for Sunnyside Artist’s ninth annual art fair at Queens of Angels Church on Sunday.

Manny Gomez, president of Sunnyside Artists, a non-profit group dedicated to promoting local artists, said 924 people attended this year to support and purchase items from the 32 participating local artists.

Several paintings were sold by artists at the fair, Gomez said. Prices ranged from $50 to $300.

Returning painters Junk Canno, Bruce Sharpe, Gareth Fletcher, Matt Cauley, Doug Condon, as well as Ann Cofta, who sold her fabric works, were among the more popular artists.

Pencil drawings by Meliksah Soyturk, one of 10 artists participating for the first time, were among some of the more popular items at the fair, according to Gomez.

Every person who bought an item was given a free glass of wine, provided by Lowery Liquors.

There were a number of prizes raffled off including gift certificates from Quaint, Dazies, Go Natural, Dime Bank, Bing’s Hallmark, wine from Richard Drake, a tea set, and cups from Turkish cultural center,

“The happiest winner was the fellow who won a three month membership to Phyzique gym…and photographer Peter Wing, who won a giant bottle of Chivas Regal donated by Family Pharmacy, was thrilled too,” Gomez said.

Food was also offered at the fair. Popular food items included Gomez’s pecan chicken salad, Eve Guillergan’s mozzarella and tomato pasta, Bar 43’s garden curry chicken and basmati rice, and beef empanadas from El Buen Sabor.

This is the best art fair I’ve ever gone to. Every time I go I buy a couple of pieces because it’s hard to resist!

This is my favorite day in Sunnyside! I have a beautiful collection of original art in my apartment now. It makes me feel great to be surrounded by the beautiful pieces such talent creates. And the artists are so approachable and happy to tell you about their work. We are darn lucky to have this group!
