Sunnyside Gardens Park to Host Carnival Saturday

 Gardens Park

May 29, 2015 By Jackie Strawbridge

Sunnyside Gardens Park will be packed this Saturday with carnival games and activities ranging from bouncy houses to sword fighting.

Tomorrow is the Sunnyside Gardens Community Association’s Memorial Day Fair, which will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sunnyside Gardens Park is located at 48-21 39th Ave.

According to the SGCA, a wide range of activity stations and food stands will be sprinkled throughout the park for the fair. Visitors will find carnival rides and two bouncy houses, alongside booths for sand art, face painting, tattoos and more.

A Cross Fit demonstration will take place at 1 p.m., followed by a Japanese sword-fighting performance from Long Island City’s Resobox at 1:30 p.m.

A handful of local performers will also take the Sunnyside Gardens Park stage, which is a small area designed to look like a subway car. Performances run from 12:30 to approximately 4:30.

Attendance is free; tickets for food, games and activities throughout the fair will support the SGCA.

Sunnyside Gardens Parks is a private park with its members paying dues.

SGCA Vice President Debra McGowan said that the Memorial Day Fair, aside from being “a very important fundraiser” for the park, allows the group to open up the space to the public.

“Anybody and everybody can come in,” she said.

A rain date for the Memorial Day Fair is scheduled for May 31.

It’s a private exclusive park which gets tax payer money. 130,000 dollars to be exact.

If you are not a member of the park there is no guarantee you be allowed to enter if they already have enough of the crowd inside. Two years ago I tried to come with my children only to be told that they are full. It was difficult to explain to my children why we are not allowed in. So if you have children and want to attend this event come early or be prepared to be turn down at the gate.

Can someone help that homeless guy that hangs out at the bottom of the steps at the 52nd Lincoln Ave stop? He does sweep that small park so give him a shower because he’s starting to smell like pee and he’s scaring the children.
