Burger King, the fast-food restaurant located at 40-15 Queens Boulevard, has been temporarily closed by the Health Department.
The store was closed for the following reasons:
Sanitary Violations
1) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
2) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.

Wow
About 3 years ago, I came here late at night and saw mice scurrying around from beneath tables. I made a complaint with 311, guess it took this long for them to be pinned with anything.
I betcha the hot water was bad too, thats why they can post they need a hot water heater.
For a Trader Joe’s to even consider this area, we would have to provide a far denser population. They want tens of thousands of walk-in customers a day, not possible around here. Their locations on 14th & 72nd Street are successful because those are two of the busiest areas of Manhattan. We already have too much traffic on QB- fortunately, they aren’t all looking to stop, park, and shop, because there isn’t any room for their cars.
We have an Aldi in Rego Park, I see. Same company (give or take) at TJs. I haven’t been there yet, though.
How about a trader joes on 46th between qns blvd and greenpoint av. There is a big store there for rent.
Shut it DOWN permanently! We need healthier options in Sunnyside. I’d love a Whole Foods or something that carries natural and organic produce. I like that Trader Joes is very affordable compared to other chains, including our own markets. But, I do praise MET and Key Food, as well as Go Natural, for maintaining a good selection of organic goods. Our neighborhood is improving and we need establishments that are healthy yet affordable.
@Younger That’s some of the most idiotic reasoning I’ve heard. The department of health has been around for over 200 years. And just because we lacked something back in the day makes it pointless in current day?
Guess we shouldn’t be using modern day medicine because we didn’t have access to that before.
Yes eating garbage helps you “build immunity”…. To what exactly? Eating healthy?
Trader joes would be a great addition here. If it were to open up (which it won’t), how about not going there if you don’t like it. Rather than trying to push your idiotic opinions on others.
I think eating at fast food joints in general is OK. Just as long as its not daily. Will i go back to BK, of course, no BOH for any place will ever change my mind with eating there. BOH inspections didn’t exist back in the day, so you ate where ever you wanted without judgement, so everyone needs to stop being so sensitive and just eat. If you are obese, that is your problem that you need to control and not blame restaurants for seving the type of food that they do. I am not obese and love to eat everything, even white castle and i’m not fat or in bad shape. I’m actually just building my immunity up even more by eating everything!
And definitely not a Trader Joes at the furniture location. I don’t like these fancy healthy organic supermarkets that people overpay for and then try to push it onto others.
Rant over.
@SSJ….after reading the BOH results for Mangal I lost my appetite…Old habits die hard
From today’s gawker.com, more good news for fast food junkies:
“Burger King today announced that it will serve its burgers for breakfast now, as part of their new corporate philosophy, “Why try harder than absolutely necessary when the American people want nothing more than to eat themselves into oblivion to erase the pain of being locked into this zombie-like existence?”
Ari: The fact remains that the sandwich at Mangal is delicious, and it is made from real food. They obviously corrected any of the issues the BOH had then, like most restaurants do. Don’t be so negative like some of the others in this forum Some of the most famous kitchens in NY have been cited- the system is designed to correct these problems, not to condemn a place in perpetuity.
i wonder what was 10 feet up up in those tunnels the kids crawls around in in the playroom. I guess they didn’t clean those either.
I remember when it opened about 40yrs ago… I can tell you most BK’s aren’t in any better shape – especially the one here in Lutz, Fl. – stopped going there a few years ago. Most of the employees were downright rude and dirty looking…I’m betting they mess with the food too.
That’s why I’m learning to cook.
Most apartments also have mice. And most people don’t clean their floors daily or counters with disenfectant or wash their chicken in a separate facility or require clean hands while handling food.
Just saying.
Mangal was shut down by the board of health last year..they reopened about a week later…Bon Appetit!!!!!
There are restaurants all up and down that corner and block. Don’t be surprised if the neighboring restaurants have the same problem.
For excellent, non-corporate fast food, try the gyro on homemade bread at Mangals on QB by 47th. Also the taco place on Greenpoint avenue, just west of 43rd, has delicious food. It’s real food, too, not a product created in some laboratory and shipped frozen to Burger King.
There are some great options available in our neighborhood; it would be amazing if these places closed because everyone decided they were tired of hearing what chicken nuggets are made of. (You don’t want to know- just be thankful for the artificial chicken flavor that makes it tasty.)
I freaking KNEW it, Props to the mod for doing the reporting and uncovering the truth, that it wasn’t a hot water heater problem like they said (lol! cmon now, )but vermin ! Sunnyside post gets my respect for 1 week !
Now I’ll have to find another place to eat dinner. So much for franchises being good for the neighborhood!
Ew! I just started a low-carb diet and was planning to get a double beef Whopper (without the bun). I haven’t had one in ten years–looks like it will be another ten.
There exists a loophole in the health departments grading requirements. Burger Kings next door neighbor ( Butcher Block) is exempt from graded inspections..somehow I believe it has something to do with selling produce..I wonder what their grade would be if they were held to the same standards as everyone else?
Great documentary about our food, Food Inc. You will never get fast food again
Burger King is delicious! Whopper Wednesdays!
That’s disgusting
For the furniture store going out of business, I think they should put a trader joes! That would be great!
As if the health violations weren’t bad enough… the signage on the door states they are waiting for a new hot water heater to reopen. That is SHAMEFUL. I will make sure as many people know about this place’s shady deceptive practices. I do like to eat fast food sometimes and I never liked that BK, the smell was weird and the burgers were never as good as other BK locations. They must think their customers are idiots. I hope the place is forced to shut down for lack of business after they reopen and another establishment takes over that prime real estate.
I’ve been visiting/Living in Sunnyside since ’98 and am proud to say that I have never once eaten at Booger King
I still eat there once in a while and have no issues with their food. It’s a fast food joint just like Wendy’s, McDonalds, and White Castle. No problem eating there as long as you don’t eat that sort of food everyday or every week. I understand why they don’t want to mention the “vermin” issue though, I mean come on, that would be shooting yourself in the foot. Will I be returning, yeah probably.
Good news everyone! That crappy furniture store on Queens Blvd is going out of business! (its the store painted in a horrible pink color). Maybe we can get something nice at that site!! Sunnyside is moving on up…lol…
I was wondering why there has been an upsurge in folks hanging out in Starbucks all day long.
and BK has the audacity to put up a sign claiming they’re putting in a new water boiler………unless youre an idiot…a notice from the Board Of Health 99.99% of the time means rats, mice or roaches!
Burger king had a sign on their door saying they were closed to change the water heater!!
The sign on Burger King’s door says they are closed while they repair their hot water heater. Odd they don’t mention anything about vermin. LOL.
I have noticed that in the past year this Burger King has been dirty –floors smelt like urine — everything was sticky — it was horrible and the hamburgers tasted bad tooo — and I have been going there for years —
I remember when I first moved to this neighborhood, back in the mid-nineties. The were selling Whoppers for 99c. It wasn’t a special sale, it seemed to be the standard price for a long time. My palate wasn’t so sophisticated back then, and I was frequently broke, so I would go there 3 or 4 times a month. But today, with so many better options, I can’t imagine eating any of their product (I almost said “food;” as if!)
But if you are a teenager, I guess it’s okay. The worst is parents who feed their kids this junk, setting them on the road to a world of poor nutrition and possible obesity. Empty calories, fat and sugar. Without these three elements, Burger King would cease to exist.
These comment threads aren’t vermin proofed either! Call the health department!
