A new group is forming in Sunnyside dedicated to the LGBT community.
Brendan Becker, who has lived in Sunnyside for the past two years, has just established “Sunnyside Out,” a group that will focus on organizing local LGBT get-togethers as well as performing community service.
“There is a significant LGBT population in Sunnyside and western Queens,” Becker said. Currently, he said, the local LGBT community usually has to go to Jackson Heights or Manhattan to meet up.
Becker said his aim is to put together a group where the members can gather at a local gay-friendly bar/restaurant or arrange potluck dinners at people’s houses. He said the organization is not exclusively for the LGBT community.
The group will be holding its first gathering this Friday, May 31, at the Wild Turkey Pub at 39-35 47th Avenue. The event starts at 7:00 p.m.
Becker is trying to get the word out about the group through social media and word of mouth. He recently created a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SunnysideOutNY) as part of his outreach.
He said his aim is to draw members from Sunnyside, Woodside, Astoria and Long Island City. He said the benefit of Sunnyside is that it is located in the middle of all four neighborhoods.
Becker can be reached at SunnysideOutNY@gmail.com

Amazing that all the comments are straight people kvetching and blaming each other. Best of luck to Mr. Becker.
Ms. Shirley, having “been around the block” several times (and married) I can tell you that you don’t know what you are talking about!
JulieJ, Maybe the straight men just aren’t attracted to you. It’s amazing how many women refuse to think that just maybe, it’s their own fault they can’t find the right guy.
Dogs are better than Facebook friends
Cats are good pets and dogs are good friends! Then there is J-Date and Match.com. LOL! Where have all the straight men gone?
@86Mets, Pat Gee, I really hope the two of you haven’t passed your troglodyte genes to another generation. Your mistake the furthermost end of your digestive tract for the world around you.
@86Mets
LOLOLO Your so right on ………………..
@JulieJ
There are plenty of straight men out there but in this town, if they aren’t pulling down a six figure salary, many women won’t give them the time of day.
A lot of decent straight men get married when they are in their twenties and still struggling while career women think they can put off marriage till their mid 40’s or later, then wonder where all the good men are. Even then, if they do find a guy, they wonder why they have fertility problems. Then there are the guys who just don’t want a woman with twenty or more years worth of sexual history and emotional baggage.
Don’t blame the gay guys. Just go get a cat or two.
But Julie, they didn’t become gay, they were born that way.
@JulieJ. I could definitely get behind that. Ha!
I’m super surprised we don’t have one of these already. The neighborhood is pretty popular with gay/lesbians. Anyhoos, good luck!
I think we need a support group for attractive single women since so many men have become gay!

Craic,
Well, in San Francisco, I believe it means “the general public.”
What does LGBT stand for?
